What is the pain in the abdomen after exercise?

September 3, 2023
I believe that many people experience small abdominal pain after exercise, sometimes even painful sweating, or worse, fainting phenomenon. So what exactly is the cause of abdominal pain after exercise?

Lack of exercise

The usual lack of exercise will be more than the regular exercise of people need more oxygen, easy to make breathing is not smooth, resulting in shortness of breath. The negative pressure of the thoracic cavity will rise when the body inhales under normal circumstances, which is conducive to the return of blood to the hepatic veins and other places. However, when shortness of breath is exercised, the chest pressure will become smaller and the blood return to the liver will be obstructed, making the liver stagnant and thus causing liver pain, a phenomenon that generally causes pain in the upper right abdomen.

Failure to do preparatory activities

Insufficient or no preparatory activities before exercise can easily lead to acute thoracic rib pain. When the muscles are tense during strenuous exercise and no preparatory activities are done, the internal organs cannot immediately move to meet the nutrients and oxygen needed for muscle activity, which can make the respiratory muscles tense and spasm, resulting in pain.

Exercise after a meal or in a state of hunger

Exercise after a meal or in a state of hunger can cause gastrointestinal dysfunction, leading to gastrointestinal spasms and thus abdominal pain.

Excessive loss of water and salt

During strenuous exercise, a large amount of water and salt will be lost due to sweating, and if it is not replenished in time, disorders of water and electrolyte metabolism can easily occur, leading to spasm of the rectus abdominis muscle and abdominal pain, which generally occurs in the late stages of exercise.

Inadequate blood supply

The blood supply to the skeletal muscles increases during exercise, while the blood supply to the internal organs decreases accordingly, and insufficient blood supply causes spasmodic contraction of the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in abdominal pain.

Excessive exercise

The amount of exercise and exercise intensity is too large, prone to muscle strains, like doing sit-ups, without controlling the amount of exercise is easy to strain the abdominal muscles and thus make abdominal pain.

Improper movement causes

In the process of exercise, because of improper action is easy to cause sports injuries, like the abdominal oblique muscle is located in the side of the abdomen, divided into internal and external muscles, mainly responsible for assisting the body to the outside, and protect the internal organs, but if the exercise is too much force or incorrect posture, it is easy to strain the abdominal oblique muscle, causing pain.

Swallowing a lot of air causes

Swallowing a lot of air during exercise makes the stomach more dilated, which can easily produce gastroesophageal reflux, regurgitation and nausea, which can lead to epigastric pain.

Suffering from abdominal diseases

If you suffer from diseases such as gastric ulcer, chronic appendicitis, chronic hepatitis, cholecystitis, etc., when exercising, the lesion will produce abdominal pain due to vibration, traction and other stimuli.

How to do after exercise abdominal pain

If abdominal pain occurs during exercise, you can slow down the speed of exercise, adjust your breathing, and press with your hand. If the pain is not reduced or even aggravated, it is recommended to stop exercising immediately and use the finger to rub the acupuncture points such as Neiguan and Sansili, which can relieve abdominal pain. If it is a spasm of the rectus abdominis muscle, local massage and back stretching movements to stretch the abdominal muscles can be performed. If these measures are not effective, it is necessary to promptly seek medical examination and treatment.

How to avoid abdominal pain after exercise

Gradual exercise

Exercise can not be pursued overnight, the amount of exercise should be increased gradually, starting with slow body movement exercise. Do a good warm-up exercise before exercise.

Do not exercise after meals

To rationalize the timing of meals, not immediately after the meal exercise, and not to exercise on an empty stomach. Generally 1-2 hours after a meal before you can participate in strenuous exercise. If you exercise before meals, you also need to eat some sugary food half an hour before exercise to ensure a sufficient supply of energy to the body.

Pay attention to hydration during exercise

When you lose too much water during exercise, you need to replenish water and salt in time to avoid the occurrence of rectus abdominis spasm due to severe water and salt loss.

Regular physical examination

For post-exercise abdominal pain caused by abdominal diseases, insist on regular physical examination, avoid strenuous exercise, and focus on light exercise.
