Is it possible to get pregnant after swimming?

September 2, 2023
We all know that there is a possibility of pregnancy when the sperm and egg come into contact. When swimming, both men and women are in the same pool, and many girls are worried about whether the sperm will swim through the water of the pool to the fallopian tubes and cause an unwanted pregnancy. Does this possibility exist? Is it possible to get pregnant after swimming?

Is it possible to get pregnant after swimming?

The possibility is almost zero. The union of sperm and egg requires the right time and the right place, a condition that is more difficult to achieve in a pool. And if the hymen is intact, it can also block the sperm from entering the fallopian tubes. In addition to this, the following obstacles are evidence that a woman's chances of getting pregnant after swimming are almost nil

Sperm-egg union requires the cooperation of many sperm

The human egg cell has a protective layer called the "corona" and "zona pellucida", while the sperm head has an organelle called the "acrosome", which contains the acrosome enzyme system. When a sperm enters the oviduct and approaches the egg, these enzymes are released to dissolve the corona and zona pellucida, the amount of enzymes contained in one sperm is not enough and only with the combined efforts of hundreds of sperm can a direct pathway be opened to the egg cell, allowing the lucky one to break through the last barrier of the egg cell.

Sperm in the pool is far from normal semen standards

WHO's criteria for normal semen: semen volume of 2-6 ml and sperm count greater than 20 million/ml. The sperm count in normal human semen is about 40-60 million/ml. When it is below 10 million/ml, it is necessary to resort to medical means to artificially assist pregnancy. Suppose the swimming pool is 50 meters long, 10 meters wide and 2 meters deep, and there are 10 men in the pool who did something they shouldn't have done in almost an hour, then there are about 50 ml of semen, containing about 3 billion sperm, being released into this 1000 cubic meters of water. The sperm concentration is diluted to 3 million per cubic meter. With this concentration, to complete the mission, by the minimum standard also requires at least 20 million sperm to launch an attack (one tenth of the amount of a normal large force), which means that there needs to be at least about 7 cubic meters of water into the body of a young girl.

The water in swimming pools is not suitable for sperm survival

The water in swimming pools is treated with disinfection, clarification and algaecide. Disinfection is generally done with chlorine disinfectants such as bleach, clarification is generally done with polymeric alumina, etc. to precipitate suspended impurities in the water, and algaecide is achieved by adding copper sulfate to the water. It is not difficult to imagine that the oxidizing nature of chlorine disinfectants, the toxicity of copper sulfate and the osmotic pressure of the pool water, which is far from the body fluid environment, will make the tadpoles uncomfortable. Professor Li Weiping, vice president and deputy director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and master's supervisor of Renji Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Second Medical University, said that the testicles where sperm are located require a temperature of 35.5°C to 36.5°C, 1 to 1.5°C lower than the normal body temperature. In a swimming pool that has been disinfected with chlorine, the sperm can only survive for 1-2 hours, and the speed of the sperm after liquefaction is about, 2 to 3 millimeters per minute.

Women need to be ovulating to get pregnant

Even if the sperm survives and enters the fallopian tube, the woman must be ovulating and have a mature egg before she can become pregnant. Having this condition limits the possibility of pregnancy again.
