What's wrong with tinnitus in climbing mountains?

April 12, 2023
I've only heard others say that their legs are sore and swollen after climbing, but not many have buzzing ears. Recently a friend asked me why he had tinnitus after climbing and it took a few hours for the buzzing to go away, is this an ear problem? Or is it a normal phenomenon.

What's wrong with ringing in the ears after climbing?

Blockage caused by cerumen shedding

When tinnitus occurs during mountain climbing, it may be caused by embolism caused by cerumen shedding loosely from the external ear canal during exercise due to the shock, and this condition also causes stuffy ears, and the symptoms will disappear when the cerumen is further shed.

Caused by excessive exercise

This is caused by abnormal blood vessels in the ear due to excessive activity. If it only happens occasionally when you climb a mountain for a long period of time or exceed the amount of exercise, there is no need to worry too much. If you usually have tinnitus as well, you should go to the hospital for an otologic examination to clarify the cause.

Caused by auditory diseases

Some diseases of the auditory system can also aggravate tinnitus under the stimulation of prolonged climbing with strenuous exercise, such as: otitis media, otosclerosis, inner ear Ménière's disease, sudden deafness, trauma, noise deafness, and senile deafness, which may also lead to tinnitus in daily life.

Caused by systemic diseases

In addition to auditory system diseases, certain systemic diseases can also cause tinnitus, which is more serious after climbing due to changes in blood pressure or hormones in the body. For example. 1. cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis, hypotension, etc.) 2. endocrine diseases (abnormal thyroid function, diabetes, etc.) 3, other neurodegenerative diseases (such as demyelinating diseases), inflammation (viral infection), trauma, drug intoxication, cervical spondylosis, temporomandibular joint diseases or malocclusion, etc. 4. Further autonomic nerve dysfunction, mental tension, depression, etc. can also lead to tinnitus.

How to do about tinnitus when climbing mountains

Chew gum to relieve it

If you have tinnitus symptoms when climbing, you can chew gum, which can balance the pressure inside and outside the ear and improve the tinnitus phenomenon.

Take a sip of water

Swallowing food can also help balance the pressure inside the ear, so when you feel your ears buzzing, taking a big sip of water can also relieve the symptoms.

Massage the hearing palace point for 1 minute

When you have tinnitus, you can press the acupuncture points around your ears, such as the hearing palace point, and you will feel your ears clear up instantly. Location: In front of the ear screen, behind the condylar process of the lower jaw, in a depression when the mouth is open. Main treatment: tinnitus, deafness, otorrhea, toothache, epilepsy. Trigeminal neuralgia, headache, dizziness and dizziness.
