Cultivation Method of Yashong: A Chinese Herbal Medicine for Healthy Growth

April 8, 2024

Chinese herbal medicine called Yashong is the whole plant of the Crassulaceae plant Sedum lineare with roots. It is also known as Banbianlian and is mainly distributed in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu and other places. Let me introduce the cultivation method of Yashong!

1. Soil

In open field cultivation, remove the covering soil in early spring from March to April, thoroughly irrigate to promote bud germination. During the growth period, apply liquid fertilizer appropriately. After the aboveground part withers in late autumn and early winter, trim it in time and cover it with soil for winter.

In pot cultivation, repotting and dividing should be done in early spring every year. Although the soil requirement is not strict, the general potting soil should be mixed with garden soil, coarse sand, and humus to ensure soil permeability and facilitate drainage.

2. Watering

Potted plants can be placed in a well-lit area to maintain dark green leaves. Place them in a sunny area during the growing season. Do not over-water during the growth period, and follow the principles of "dry and wet" and "prefer dryness to wetness".

Watering should be done only after the top layer of potting soil is completely dry. Avoid waterlogging in the pot, as it can easily cause root rot and diseases. In the rainy season with high air humidity (July to August), watering should be strictly controlled.

3. Fertilization

Generally, no additional fertilization is needed, but liquid fertilizer can be applied appropriately during the growth period to maintain vigorous plant growth. In winter, it can be overwintered in a greenhouse, placed in a wind-facing and sunny location, and kept moderately moist but not waterlogged.

During cultivation, pay attention to ventilation to prevent the occurrence of diseases and pests. The suitable temperature for growth is 13-20°C from March to September and 10-15°C from September to the following March. Repotting should be done every 2-3 years for potted plants.

4. Diseases and Pests

When the soil is too wet, root rot can easily occur, so timely drainage or the use of fungicides is necessary. In addition, aphids can infest stems and leaves, leading to sooty mold; scale insects can damage leaves, causing white wax powder to form.

For pest infestations, timely inspection is necessary. Once discovered, they should be promptly removed or washed with soapy water. In severe cases, use an oxymatrine emulsion for prevention and control.
