Wuxiangcao: A Chinese Medicinal Herb for Relieving Exterior Syndrome and Alleviating Pain

Wuxiangcao, Chinese medicine name. It is the whole herb of Mosla soochowensis Matsuda, a plant of the family Lamiaceae. It is distributed in Suzhou, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, and eastern Jiangxi. It has the functions of relieving exterior syndrome, clearing summer-heat, regulating qi, and alleviating pain. It is used for colds, heat stroke, tetanus, gastric pain, sore throat, boils, and centipede bites.


 

Wuxiangcao is the whole herb of Mosla soochowensis, a plant of the family Lamiaceae.

Wuxiangcao is an annual aromatic herb, 30-40 centimeters tall, with many branches. The stems are square-shaped, sparsely covered with spreading short hairs.

The leaves are opposite, lanceolate, 2-3 centimeters long, 5-8 millimeters wide, gradually pointed at the apex, wedge-shaped at the base, with sparse serrations, smooth, and covered with glandular spots on the lower surface; petioles are 5 millimeters long.

The lax cymose inflorescence is terminal; bracts are very small, nearly circular, with short pointed tips; flowers are about 6 millimeters long; calyx is campanulate, 5-lobed, with short hairs on the outside; corolla is pale red, twice as long as the calyx, with an upright upper lip and a 3-lobed lower lip, with the central lobe being the largest;

There are 4 stamens, with the posterior stamens or upper stamens slightly protruding from the corolla, the anthers are 2-celled, widely divergent, the anterior stamens or lower stamens are degenerate; there is 1 pistil, with a deeply 4-lobed ovary, a slightly protruding style, and 2-cleft stigma, with unequal styles.

The small nut is brown, round, reticulate, with tiny glandular spots, and a distinct hilum at the base. The flowering period is from September to October, and the fruiting period is from October to November.

Wuxiangcao has a pungent taste and warm nature. It belongs to the lung and stomach meridians.
