Rubella is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by the rubella virus, including congenital infection and acquired infection. Clinically, it is characterized by a short prodromal period, low fever, rash, and enlargement of lymph nodes behind the ears and at the back of the head. The general condition is mild, with a short course and a good prognosis.

However, rubella is highly contagious and can occur throughout the year, with a higher incidence in winter and spring. The susceptible age group is mainly 1-5 years old, so it is more common in preschool children.

If a pregnant woman is infected with the rubella virus early in pregnancy, although the clinical symptoms are mild, the virus can infect the fetus through the placental barrier. Whether it is a manifest or inapparent infection, it can lead to congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) characterized by congenital fetal defects, stillbirths, premature births, etc.

The early diagnosis and prevention of rubella are extremely important. Currently, there is no specific treatment for rubella, but the disease can be prevented through immunization.
