Climbing shrubs or vines, rarely small shrubs, 1-3m long. Leaves opposite; petiole 5-8mm long; leaf blade tough and papery, inverted ovate or long ovate, 3-4cm long, 1-1.5cm wide, occasionally up to 7cm long and 2.5cm wide, rounded, obtuse, or slightly notched at the apex, wedge-shaped at the base, entire margin.
The back of the sour vine fruit is often covered with a thin white powder, with raised midribs and indistinct lateral veins. Inflorescence terminal or axillary, borne on leafless branches of the previous year, 3-8mm long, covered with fine hairs, with 3-8 flowers, and 1-2 layers of bracts at the base.
Pedicels about 1.5mm long, sometimes covered with fine hairs, small bracts lanceolate or elongate, with marginal hairs, usually without glandular dots; flowers tetramerous, about 2mm long; calyx partially connate at the base, equal, ovate or triangular, acute at the apex, with glandular dots; petals white or yellowish, separate, ovate or elongate, rounded or obtuse at the apex, about 2mm long, with marginal hairs, densely covered with papillary projections inside, with glandular dots.
