【Botanical morphology of Malus pumila】

Malus pumila is a tall tree, reaching up to 20m. The young branches and buds are covered with reddish-brown short hairs. The leaves are alternate, with leaf stalks 1-3cm long. The leaf scars are elliptical in shape, about 3-4cm long.

The leaves of Malus pumila are leathery, narrowly elliptic, obovate, or oblanceolate, 8-17cm long and 2.5-5.5cm wide. The apex is acute or obtuse, usually blunt, and the base is cuneate. The margin is slightly rolled up, and the back of the leaf is sparsely covered with reddish-brown hairs. There are 8-12 pairs of lateral veins.

The pedicels are 6-18mm long, covered with reddish-brown short hairs. The bracts fall off, leaving a scar.

The perianth consists of 9 segments, white in color. The outer whorl has 3 segments, oblong-elliptic, 6-7cm long, and the inner whorl has 2 segments, oblong, 5-6cm long. There are numerous stamens, about 1cm long, with a short blunt triangular protrusion. The pistils are numerous, with a pistil group about 1.5cm long.

The aggregate fruit is inverted-ovate, deep red, and becomes woody and purplish-red when ripe. The seeds are elliptic, 6-7cm long, and red in color. It flowers from April to May and fruits from August to October.
