【Introduction of Fallen Frost Red】

  Ilex cornuta, also known as Ilex microphylla, Small-leaved Holly, or Soft Hair Whole Winter. Deciduous shrub, 1-2m tall. The bark is gray; the small branches are hairy or nearly hairless, with obvious lenticels.

  Fallen Frost Red has alternate leaves; the petiole is 6-8mm long; the leaf blade is membranous, elliptic, rarely obovate or inverted ovate, 2-9cm long, 1-4cm wide;

  The apex is gradually pointed, the base is wedge-shaped, the margin has sharp serrations, the upper surface of the midrib is concave, the lower surface is convex, the reticulate veins are obvious, and both sides are sparsely covered with stiff hairs.

  The umbellate inflorescence is solitary in the leaf axil; the male flowers are 4-5, with a pedicel 2.5mm long, a calyx diameter of 1.5-2mm, calyx lobes triangular, with soft hairs on the outside, corolla diameter of 4.5-5mm;

  The petals are oblong, slightly connate at the base, and the stamens are slightly shorter than the corolla; the female flowers are 4-5, with a pedicel 2-3mm long, calyx similar to male flowers, corolla diameter of 4.5mm, petals ovate, ovary ovate, and the stigma is disc-shaped.

  The fruit is spherical, about 5mm in diameter, red, with 4-5 rarely 1 elliptical or ovoid-shaped stone cells, smooth on the back, and the inner pericarp is leathery. The flowering period is from August to September, and the fruiting period is in October.

【Treatment of Burns with Fallen Frost Red Roots】

  Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Fallen Frost Red has the effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, cooling blood, and stopping bleeding. It is mainly used for treating burns, stomatitis, ulceration, and external bleeding.

  ①Treatment of lung abscess: Take 1-2 liang of fresh roots of Fallen Frost Red, decoct in water and take orally.

  ②Treatment of burns: Crush the fresh root bark of Fallen Frost Red into a paste and apply it topically.
