【Effects and Functions of Wuzhuafeng】

  Wuzhuafeng, also known as Wuzhuateng, is the whole herb of the Rosaceae family's Potentilla chinensis, and the whole plant is used as medicine.

  Wuzhuafeng mainly grows on the sunny slopes of low mountains, and is distributed in Sichuan and Guizhou provinces of China.

  Wuzhuafeng is non-toxic, has a cool medicinal nature, and a bitter taste. It has the effect of promoting blood circulation and dispersing blood stasis, and is used to treat injuries, chicken claw wind, and lumbago.

【Yuzhucao and Wuzhuafeng for Treating Tetanus】

  Prescription: 30g of yuzhucao (Polygonatum odoratum), 20g of Wuzhuafeng (Potentilla chinensis), 20g of cheqiancao (Plantago asiatica), and 10g of wugong (Scolopendra).

  Functions and Indications: This prescription has the effects of detoxifying, dispelling wind, and relieving spasms. It is used to treat tetanus.

  Usage and Dosage: Take one dose daily, decoct with water and consume frequently.

  Case Study:

  Mr. Zeng, a 21-year-old farmer, accidentally injured his left ankle while chopping firewood a few days ago. The wound was about 2 inches long and was bleeding profusely. He went to the village health center at that time, where the wound was sutured to stop the bleeding and medication was applied.

  On August 9th, the patient felt discomfort in his face, and experienced nausea and vomiting. On the morning of the 10th, his condition worsened, and he began to have convulsions in all four limbs, so he was sent to the hospital for treatment.

  Upon examination, the patient was unconscious, with a bitter smile on his face, and had intermittent strong contractions of the neck, with arching of the back. The wound was slightly swollen, and his tongue was red with a white and slightly yellow coating. His pulse was wiry and rapid. The diagnosis was tetanus.

  Treatment was carried out with this prescription. The local wound was cleaned and treated with Sanhuang ointment. After taking three doses of the medicine, there was no significant change in the patient's condition, and the convulsions persisted.

  The patient was instructed to take three more doses, and his consciousness gradually became clear, with a reduction in the frequency of convulsions. His tongue and pulse were the same as before. The original prescription was continued, and three more doses were taken. After taking the medicine, the patient's consciousness was clear, his speech was normal, and the convulsions and neck stiffness disappeared.

  Afterwards, the prescription was changed to Siwutang with added sangzhi, digupi, and juhua for one week, and the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital.

【Clinical Applications of Wuzhuafeng】

  1. Chronic bronchitis

  60g of Wuzhuafeng (Potentilla chinensis), 24g of Pengqianshi (Rhododendron simsii), 30g of Gonggai (Cuscuta campestris) leaves, 12g of Ganmomi (Houttuynia cordata), 9g of Baimianfeng (Senecio candicans), and 15g of Jiemo (Cuscuta australis). Decoct with water and take in two doses daily.

  2. Anemia

  15g each of Wuzhuafeng (Potentilla chinensis), Maloushuang (Eucommia ulmoides), Jiucengfeng (Achyranthes bidentata), Jieduanpang (Nymphaea tetragona), and Zoumafeng (Artemisia vulgaris). Stew with pig trotters and consume.

  3. Cardiac neurosis, coronary heart disease

  10-15g each of Wuzhuafeng (Potentilla chinensis), Jiucengfeng (Achyranthes bidentata), Jiulongzuan (Periploca sepium), Baowanfeng (Mosla chinensis), and Sifangzuan (Lonicera japonica). Decoct with water and consume. For coronary heart disease, add fruits of Congliang (Zingiber officinale).
