Xilai Grass: Cultivation Techniques and Medicinal Benefits

March 12, 2024

Xilai grass, also known as Feizhu grass or Feizhu vegetable. The dried aboveground part is generally used as a medicinal part. Let's take a look at the specific cultivation methods and field management together with the editor!

Cultivation Techniques of Xilai Grass

Seeds can be propagated by seeding or direct sowing.

Seeding: After autumn harvest, plow the land to a depth of about 20cm, and plow it again before the Grain Rain next year;

Apply 75,000-105,000kg of compost per 1hm2, level the ridges, sow the seeds, use 3.75kg of seeds per 1hm2, cover with 1-1.5cm of soil, and water after sowing;

Seedlings emerge in 15-17 days, when the seedlings are 5-10cm tall, with a seedling distance of 5cm. In the northern region, the land is leveled and fertilized after wheat harvest;

Transplant the seedlings into ridges (when the seedlings are about 30cm tall), with 2 rows per ridge, row spacing of 45cm, and plant spacing of 30cm.

Direct sowing: 10 days before the Grain Rain, open furrows between the rows in the wheat field, with a depth of 3cm and a soil covering of 2cm.

Use 7.5kg of seeds per 4hm2, and water after sowing. When the wheat is harvested and the seedlings are 7-10cm tall, the row spacing is 45cm and the plant spacing is 30cm.

Field Management of Xilai Grass

Water and weed when the seedlings are 6-10cm tall in direct sowing fields.

Apply human manure or cake fertilizer when the seedlings are 30-45cm tall, and water after application, or apply 75kg of ammonium sulfate per 1hm2. Keep the soil moist during the plant growth period.

Pharmacological Effects of Xilai Grass

1. Anti-inflammatory effects

The reason why Xilai grass is commonly used as a "rheumatism medicine" in rural areas is mainly due to its anti-inflammatory effects, which can help alleviate inflammation in rheumatic joint diseases.

2. Hypotensive effects

Studies have shown that Xilai grass also has a certain vasodilating effect, which can help block vasoconstrictor reactions caused by nerve stimulation, thus having a certain hypotensive effect.

3. Antibacterial effects

Xilai grass also has antibacterial effects. It is highly sensitive to Staphylococcus aureus and has inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus albus, Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, and Porcine cholera bacteria. Therefore, Xilai grass can be used in the treatment of diseases such as malaria and wet sores.
