Purple oilwood, also known as Meijiang in the Dai language, is an evergreen tree that grows to a height of about 15-20 meters. It has pinnate compound leaves with alternate arrangement, measuring 6-15 cm in length. The leaf axis has narrow wings, and there are 3-8 pairs of thick leathery leaflets.



 

The leaflets are elliptical or broadly ovate, 1.5-4 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, with smooth edges, a concave tip, and a wedge-shaped base. The upper surface is shiny green. The inflorescence is a conical raceme borne in the leaf axil.

The flowers are small, without petals, and are dioecious; male flowers have 1-5 pink sepals with hairs and 3-5 stamens, while female flowers have 2-5 sepals, a single ovary, and no stalk. The fruit is spherical, turning red when ripe, with a network pattern on the surface.

1. Biological characteristics

Purple oilwood prefers warm and humid climates with abundant sunlight and well-drained soil. It is suitable for cultivation in sandy loam with deep soil and rich humus content.

2. Cultivation techniques

Propagation is done using seeds. Harvest mature and fully ripe fruits, dry them, and store them in sand. Sow the seeds in March of the following year, in rows with a spacing of 30 cm, and a distance of 5 cm between seeds. After covering with soil, water the soil to keep it moist.

Transplant when the seedlings are 35-40 cm tall. Plant at a spacing of 300 cm × 300 cm.
