Breeding Characteristics and Ecological Adaptability of Shieldleaf Cranberry: A Preliminary Study

March 9, 2024

No matter which kind of Chinese medicine, its reproduction is related to the growth environment. So what do we know about the breeding characteristics and ecological adaptability of the Shieldleaf Cranberry? Today, I will discuss these aspects with you.

Research Objectives of Shieldleaf Cranberry

Preliminary research on the breeding characteristics and ecological adaptability of the Shieldleaf Cranberry, providing a basis for further development and utilization of this species.

Methods: Through field observations and microscopic structure observations of reproductive organs, the breeding characteristics of wild Shieldleaf Cranberry were analyzed. The Shieldleaf Cranberry was introduced to different altitudes to compare the phenological period and breeding characteristics, and analyze its ecological adaptability.

Research Results of Shieldleaf Cranberry

Under natural conditions, the Shieldleaf Cranberry mainly reproduces through rhizome seedlings and basal seedlings. The seedlings grow by the end of August in the first year, and the floral buds differentiate by mid to late November. After overwintering, they bloom from early April to early May in the next year. The flowering period of a single flower is 5-7 days, and the main pollinators are bees. The fruits ripen from late June to early July. The Shieldleaf Cranberry showed good reproductive and vegetative growth in both introduced areas. The fruit yield in introduced area 1 was higher than the wild state, while the fruit yield in introduced area 2 was significantly reduced. The results of cutting propagation experiments showed that the highest survival rate of cuttings treated with a mixture of 1000mg/L rooting powder and 100mg/L boric acid solution for 10 seconds was 52% for woody cuttings and 93% for semi-woody cuttings after 90 days.

Research Conclusion of Shieldleaf Cranberry

The Shieldleaf Cranberry blooms from April to May and the fruits ripen from late June to early July. Vegetative reproduction is the main breeding method. When introduced to low-altitude areas between 11m and 50m, the Shieldleaf Cranberry showed good vegetative growth but a significant decrease in fruit yield, indicating a weaker ecological adaptability. When introduced to areas above 800m, the Shieldleaf Cranberry showed good vegetative growth, higher fruit set rate than wild plants, and an earlier phenological period.
