Wuxie Vine: A Rare Traditional Chinese Medicine with Blood Sugar-Lowering Effects

March 8, 2024

Wuxie vine, also known as Shigeng vine, is a relatively rare traditional Chinese medicine. The most common effect of Wuxie vine is its ability to lower blood sugar, and it has been widely used in clinical treatment. Let's take a look at the efficacy, function, and pharmacological effects of Wuxie vine.

【Efficacy and Function of Wuxie vine】

In traditional Chinese medicine, Wuxie vine is believed to have the effects of clearing heat, cooling blood, promoting pus drainage, reducing swelling, relieving pain, and promoting tissue regeneration. It is mainly used to treat rheumatism, sore throat, lymphadenitis, breast abscess, ulcers, eczema, unidentified swelling and toxicity, and snake bites.

  1. "Practical Chinese Herbal Medicine": The root can reduce swelling, detoxify, clear heat, and cool blood. It is used to treat multiple abscesses, deep abscesses, mastitis, boils, and toxic swellings.

  2. "Color Atlas of Commonly Used Chinese Herbal Medicines": The tender branches and leaves can relieve pain, promote tissue regeneration, and reduce swelling. It is used to treat gunshot wounds and kill lice.

Precautions: As long as it is used within the recommended dosage, Wuxie vine is generally safe and has no side effects. The safety of Wuxie vine during pregnancy and lactation has not been tested.

Diabetic patients should take Wuxie vine extract under the clinical supervision of healthcare professionals to lower blood sugar.

  【Pharmacological Effects of Wuxie vine】

  1. Hypoglycemic effect

Experts observed the hypoglycemic effect of Wuxie vine compound on experimental diabetic mice induced by streptozotocin.

The results showed that the high and low doses of Wuxie vine compound could significantly counteract the diabetic effects induced by streptozotocin.

This indicates that its main mechanism of hypoglycemic action is through its protective effect on pancreatic islet cells and promotion of recovery and regeneration of pancreatic beta cells.

  2. Hypolipidemic effect

The high and low doses of Wuxie vine compound could significantly reduce the levels of serum total cholesterol and triglycerides in rats with induced hyperlipidemia.

This preparation was effective in a model of endogenous hypercholesterolemia formed by feeding animals with saturated fatty acid feed.

It is speculated that its hypolipidemic effect is related to the inhibition of endogenous cholesterol synthesis, promotion of reverse cholesterol transport, and inhibition of liver protein uptake.

Mice fed with high-fat and normal-fat diets were fed with Wuxie vine leaf extract for 3 weeks to observe their lipid metabolism.

The results showed that Wuxie vine leaf extract did not affect the body weight and food absorption of mice, but significantly slowed down the digestion of fat in the last two weeks.

In addition, the levels of neutral steroids and acidic lipids in the feces increased in both groups. Wuxie vine leaf extract reduced the levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides in the serum.

This may be achieved by affecting fermentation in the cecum and subsequently influencing the entire lipid metabolism pathway in mice.

  3. Inhibition of sweetness

Potassium salts of Wuxie vine acid can inhibit the sensitivity of humans or animals to the sweet taste of sucrose and sodium saccharin, but the glycosides of hydrolysis products do not have the ability to inhibit sweetness.

Gurmarin in Wuxie vine leaf extract can inhibit the sweet taste of sucrose, glucose, gum, and saccharin, but it does not affect the taste of salty, sour, or bitter flavors.
