Yakutian Rhubarb is a perennial subshrub with a height of about 1m. The rhizome is thick, cylindrical, purplish-brown, with stripes, sparsely covered with soft hairs in the upper part, and hairless in the lower part.

The leaves are alternate; the petiole is 1.5-6cm long, and the upper leaves are stalkless or nearly stalkless; the leaf blade is heart-shaped or ovate-heart-shaped, 6-11cm long and 3-9cm wide, with smaller leaves in the upper part, ovate or lanceolate;

The apex is gradually pointed or acute, the base is bluntly rounded, the margin has irregular coarse serrations, the leaf surface is sparsely covered with soft hairs or nearly hairless, and the back of the leaf is covered with tiny stiff hairs; stalkless or nearly stalkless; 6-7 pairs of lateral veins.


The flowers are small, monoecious; male flowers in umbel-like or umbel-conical clusters, terminal or axillary, 8-15cm long; calyx hairless, lobes blunt triangular;

petals spoon-shaped; stamens 8(-10); filaments linear, about 2mm long; anthers oval; disc purple-red; sterile ovaries conical, about 1mm long;

female flowers in panicles, terminal or in the upper leaf axils, drooping when fruiting; with 2 leaf-like bracts, white, the bracts covered with soft hairs, with eyelashes along the edges; no calyx, petals, or stamens.

The fruit is supported by enlarged bracts, with a diameter of 3-4mm, covered with soft hairs, with veins, attached to the lower part of the bracts, and the bracts expand when fruiting, wide-elliptic or nearly circular, with a diameter of 2-2.5cm, with a reticulated vein pattern. One seed. Flowering period in autumn.
