Proper Storage of Precious Chinese Medicinal Herbs in Summer

March 4, 2024

With the arrival of summer, many precious Chinese medicinal herbs may spoil if not stored properly, such as ginseng, musk, pearl powder, and caterpillar fungus, etc. So, how should we store these precious Chinese medicinal herbs? Let's take a look at what the pharmacist says.

How to store precious Chinese medicinal herbs:

  Ginseng:

Cover with roasted glutinous rice and store in a sealed glass bottle.

  Caterpillar fungus:

Wrap it with transparent glass paper and place it in a box, with a little bit of Chinese red peony skin around it to prevent insects. Alternatively, store it in a lime box to prevent insect infestation and moisture.

  Musk:

Store it in a tightly-sealed small bottle in a cool and dry place to prevent loss of fragrance.

  Pearl powder:

Wrap the pearl powder with oil paper and put it in a glass or porcelain container, sealed. Avoid storing it with other medications to prevent odor transfer. It is best to refrigerate it.

  Civet musk:

It is prone to mold and tail loss. When storing, you can put it in Sichuan pepper and place it in a suitable container, in a lime box or in a dry and ventilated place. Pay attention to protecting the tail, as it is the main medicinal part of the civet musk.

  Deer antler:

Wrap it in fine cloth and store it in a camphor wood box or lime box, sealed. It is best to add a little bit of Sichuan pepper to prevent insect infestation. Deer antler powder should be stored in a porcelain bottle.

  Panax notoginseng:

It is prone to insect infestation at the broken root, and the insect holes are very small, making it difficult to detect. When storing, put it in a cloth bag, place it in a wooden box, and then put it in a lime jar to ensure dryness and prevent insect infestation.

  Saffron:

Put it in a sealed small porcelain jar and store it in a cool place.
