【Decoding Stomach Problems: Analyzing Stool for Gastric Health】

March 3, 2024

Modern people are under a lot of stress and have irregular eating habits, so most people have stomach problems at a young age. But there are many types of stomach problems, how to distinguish them? You can determine the health of your stomach by looking at your stool.

【Determine the Health of Your Stomach through Stool】

If you haven't drunk coffee but your vomit is coffee-colored, be alert, this may indicate gastric bleeding.

Depending on the amount of bleeding, the color and consistency of the stool will vary.

With a small amount of bleeding, the stool will be normal yellow and well-formed, but the lab results will show positive fecal occult blood; with tens of milliliters of bleeding, the stool will be black and well-formed, as the iron ions in the blood combine with sulfides in the intestine to form iron sulfide, resulting in black stool.

With hundreds of milliliters of bleeding, the stool will become black and tarry, and a large amount of bleeding will increase the water content in the stool and mix it with some mucus, resulting in loose and shiny stool; when the bleeding reaches a thousand milliliters, the intestinal peristalsis is fast, and even though it is stool, it will appear as bloody stool.

【Early Symptoms of Stomach Cancer】

1. Feeling bloated and uncomfortable in the upper abdomen.

Many stomach cancer patients experience a bloating sensation. Although this sensation is not severe, its repeated occurrence can be troublesome, especially during periods of rest when the symptoms are more pronounced.

Because the symptoms are mild, many people do not think of stomach cancer and instead consider it as a common stomach problem.

2. Upper abdominal pain.

In the early stages of stomach cancer, patients generally experience upper abdominal pain. Some patients may think this is a recurrence of their stomach problem and do not pay much attention to it.

However, as the condition worsens, the pain becomes more intense and lasts longer.

This type of pain is not easily relieved, and even if relief is achieved, it quickly reoccurs. In fact, this is an early symptom of stomach cancer, so it is best to go to the hospital for examination immediately.

3. Loss of appetite or indigestion.

Some people with stomach problems often experience indigestion, but as stomach cancer patients, in addition to indigestion, they also experience loss of appetite. Many stomach cancer patients think this is an ulcer or gastritis and that taking medication will help. However, taking stomach medication not only does not alleviate the symptoms but also causes acid reflux. Over time, the symptoms become more severe.

【Symptoms of Chronic Gastritis】

Chronic gastritis lacks specific symptoms, and the severity of symptoms does not necessarily correspond to the degree of gastric mucosal lesions. Most patients have no symptoms or have varying degrees of digestive symptoms such as upper abdominal pain, decreased appetite, postprandial fullness, and acid reflux.

Patients with chronic atrophic gastritis may have anemia, weight loss, glossitis, and diarrhea. In some patients with concomitant mucosal erosion, upper abdominal pain is more pronounced and may be accompanied by bleeding, such as vomiting or black stools.

Symptoms often recur, with irregular abdominal pain that often occurs during or after meals. Most of the pain is located in the upper abdomen or around the navel, and in some patients, the location is not fixed. Mild pain can be intermittent and dull, while severe pain can be severe and cramping.
