Cultivation Methods of Toona Sinensis: A Guide to Growing and Harvesting

March 2, 2024

The family of Toona sinensis is called Toona sinensis, which is often confused with Toona sinensis due to their similar names, but in fact, the seeds of the two are different. The family of Toona sinensis has the effects of eliminating phlegm and cough, warming the middle, and diuresis. It is often used to treat diseases such as cough and asthma, excessive and thick phlegm, diarrhea, and abdominal distension. As a common traditional Chinese medicine, the cultivation of the family of Toona sinensis also has its own characteristics. Let's take a look at the cultivation methods of the family of Toona sinensis below.

1. Main cultivation season

In northern China, it can be sown in stages from March to September in open field, and can be continuously harvested and utilized. When the temperature is below -5℃, if measures such as insulation and cold protection are taken, it can be cultivated all year round.

2. Field preparation

Adequate water source, good drainage and irrigation, and loose soil should be selected for the site, and the field should be cleaned, removing weeds and residues of previous crops. Plow to a depth of 15-20 cm, apply 1500 kg of well-rotted manure and 50 kg of compound fertilizer per 667 square meters, plow and mix well, and make ridges with a width of 130 cm. The ridges should be as flat and fine as possible.

3. Sowing

Direct sowing is suitable for the cultivation of the family of Toona sinensis, and it can be sown in rows or broadcasted in the field. If sown in stages, continuous harvesting can be achieved. From early spring to early autumn, it can be sown once every 3 weeks in the original place for continuous harvesting. Generally, 1.5-2 kg of seeds are used per 667 square meters. After sowing, cover with fine soil and slightly compact. Water the soil immediately after sowing. When the seedlings are in the form of young plants, the sowing period should not be too early. It is generally suitable to sow in late August to prevent premature bolting.

The family of Toona sinensis is commonly used for sprout cultivation, and it takes about 7-10 days from sowing to harvesting. The seeds should be soaked in warm water for about 12 hours, and then placed in a moist place for germination. Usually, a thin layer of soil or some moist absorbent paper is first placed in the seedling tray, and then the seedling tray is placed in a warm and dark place for several days. 2-3 days before consumption, the seedling tray is moved to a bright place to promote the greening of the seedlings.

4. Field management

The main work of field management for the cultivation of the family of Toona sinensis is water management, which should be irrigated lightly and frequently, with the basic requirement of maintaining soil moisture. When the soil fertility is low, after the seedlings are even, water with 3-5 kg of urine-fermented water per 667 square meters can be applied in conjunction with irrigation. In addition, weeding should be done in the field to prevent weed growth. The main pests of Toona sinensis are yellow-striped flea beetle, leaf roller, and aphids. When they occur severely, they can be controlled with pesticides, but attention should be paid to safety intervals.

5. Harvest

Generally, the seedlings can be harvested after 20 days of sowing, or all at once. The whole plant can be harvested in spring and summer, and the seeds can be cut when they are ripe in August to September, dried, and the seeds are removed and impurities are removed. Harvesting and storage: can be harvested in autumn, washed, used fresh or dried.

6. Seed cultivation

When cultivating seeds, a separate seed field should be established, and selection work should be done to remove impurities and inferior plants in a timely manner, especially pay attention to removing wild species of the family of Toona sinensis as weeds. Proper application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be increased for the seed field. The seed field is generally sown in early April, and the seedlings are thinned and transplanted in late April, maintaining a plant spacing of 10 cm x 10 cm. Harvest the seeds in a timely manner after they are mature.
