The formula of Fu Shen Tang consists of Fu Shen, Yuan Zhi, Ren Shen, Tong Cao, Mai Dong, Huang Qi, Jie Geng, Gan Cao, and Sheng Jiang. The pathogenesis is the deficiency of both qi and yin, leading to phlegm-heat obstruction in the throat.

Fu Shen Tang is mainly used to "treat extreme deficiency of pulse, cough causing heart pain, obstruction in the throat like a foreign body, and even throat swelling and palpitations."

Fu Shen: Calms the mind, soothes the spirit, and promotes diuresis. It is used to treat heart deficiency palpitations, forgetfulness, insomnia, epilepsy, and difficulty urinating.

Yuan Zhi: It has the functions of calming the mind, benefiting intelligence, resolving phlegm, and reducing swelling. It is used for insomnia with frequent dreams, forgetfulness, palpitations, confusion, cough with phlegm, abscesses and swelling, and breast pain.

Tong Cao: It has the effects of clearing heat, promoting diuresis, and promoting lactation. It is used for damp-heat urinary tract infections, edema with reduced urine output, and insufficient lactation.

Huang Qi: Tonifies qi, consolidates the exterior, expels toxins, promotes diuresis, and promotes tissue regeneration. It is used for qi deficiency and weakness, chronic diarrhea and prolapse of the anus, spontaneous sweating, edema, uterine prolapse, chronic nephritis with proteinuria, diabetes, and slow-healing wounds.

Jie Geng: It has the effects of promoting lung function, relieving throat, resolving phlegm, and draining pus. It is used for cough with excessive phlegm, chest tightness and discomfort, sore throat and hoarseness, and lung abscess with pus discharge.

If the deficiency of qi and yin is not replenished, and only phlegm-resolving herbs are used, the phlegm will continue to accumulate. If qi is nourished and yin is replenished, phlegm will not be formed. Fu Shen and Yuan Zhi calm the mind and soothe the spirit, Ren Shen and Huang Qi greatly tonify the original qi, Jie Geng and Gan Cao resolve phlegm and drain pus, Mai Dong nourishes yin and moistens dryness, and Tong Cao promotes circulation.

Fu Shen Tang is clinically used to treat chronic rhinitis, chronic pharyngitis, and bronchial asthma, which can effectively stabilize the condition. The dosage of the herbs is determined based on the different damages to qi, blood, and body fluids.

If there are obvious cold symptoms and severe cough, the dosage of Yuan Zhi can be increased to 18g to dispel cold in the lesser yin meridian. If there is severe qi deficiency, the dosage of Ren Shen and Huang Qi can be increased. If there is severe deficiency of body fluids, the dosage of Mai Dong can be increased, or nourishing yin herbs such as lily, Tian Dong, and Sheng Di can be added.

For acute suppurative tonsillitis in patients with preexisting constitutional deficiencies or those triggered by fatigue, with symptoms of sore throat and swelling, the dosage of Jie Geng can be increased to 30g. At the same time, the dosage of raw Huang Qi can also be increased to 60g to promote pus drainage and qi tonification.

This formula focuses on symptoms of insomnia with frequent dreams, palpitations, shortness of breath, and poor appetite. In modern times, it can be used to treat conditions such as neurasthenia and neurosis.
