Medicated Diets for Old-Age Emphysema: Relieving Cough and Phlegm, Benefiting the Lungs and Spleen

Old-age emphysema is caused by factors such as smoking, infection, and air pollution. Patients have chronic cough, sputum production, and progressive shortness of breath. The chest appears barrel-shaped and may be accompanied by cyanosis of the lips and fingertips. Pulmonary heart disease, heart failure, and respiratory failure may also occur. For old-age emphysema, the diet should be light and easily digestible, and medicated diet should mainly include ingredients that can relieve cough and phlegm, reduce gasping, benefit the lungs and spleen, and tonify the kidneys.

Medicated Diet 1

Medicated Diet 1: Orchid Silver Powder Whole Chicken

Ingredients: Fresh orchids (20 petals), fat hen (about 1500 grams), cooked ham, bean vermicelli, fresh pea sprouts (50 grams each), 1 egg, 5 grams of fritillaria, chicken broth, seasonings as needed

Instructions: Wash and finely slice the orchid petals. Soak the fritillaria in warm water for 20 minutes. Wash the fresh pea sprouts. Cut the cooked ham into shreds. Deep fry the vermicelli until crispy in lard. Beat the egg. Heat a little lard in a frying pan until it is 40% hot, then pour in the beaten egg to make a thin pancake. Remove and slice. Blanch the hen in boiling water, then wash and place it in a bowl. Rub the chicken with salt, cooking wine, and white pepper. Pour the fritillaria and the soaking liquid into the chicken belly. Put the wrapped Sichuan peppercorns, green onions, and ginger on top of the chicken. Cover with cotton paper and steam until cooked. Remove the green onions, ginger, and Sichuan peppercorns. Place the chicken belly side up on a plate. Heat some lard in the frying pan until it is 50-60% hot. Stir-fry the green onions and ginger until fragrant, then pour in the chicken broth. Remove the green onions and ginger. Add the vermicelli and cook until soft. Add salt, monosodium glutamate, cooking wine, and white pepper. Thicken with wet starch, then add the shredded ham, egg white, pea sprouts, and orchid shreds. Stir well and pour over the chicken.

Effects: Tonifies Qi, nourishes the lungs, relieves cough, and eliminates phlegm

Medicated Diet 2

Medicated Diet 2: Sichuan Fritillaria Rice Pear

Ingredients: 2 Yali pears (300-400 grams each), 6 grams of Sichuan fritillaria, 100 grams of glutinous rice, 10 grams of cooked lard, 150 grams of sugar, 3 grams of osmanthus syrup, a little wet starch

Instructions: Grind the Sichuan fritillaria into fine powder. Remove the skin and core of the pears and place them in a bowl. Rinse the glutinous rice and place it in another bowl. Steam the glutinous rice until cooked, then add white sugar, osmanthus syrup, and lard. Mix well and pour into the bowl with the pears. Cover the bowl with oil paper and steam for 1 hour. Remove and flip onto a plate. In a pot, add water and 100 grams of sugar. Boil and thicken with wet starch. Pour over the Sichuan fritillaria rice pears.

Effects: Clears heat, transforms phlegm, moistens the lungs, and relieves cough

Indications: Suitable for acute and chronic bronchitis, elderly asthma cough, etc.

Medicated Diet 3

Medicated Diet 3: Taling Date Soup

Ingredients: 10 grams of Taling seed, 20 jujubes

Instructions: Fry the Taling seed until golden brown, then grind it into powder. Wash the jujubes and split them open. Add 500 ml of water and boil until reduced to 200 ml. Add the Taling seed powder and cook for another 10 minutes. Remove the soup and eat the jujubes.

Effects: Clears phlegm, stops coughing, and promotes diuresis

Indications: Suitable for elderly patients with phlegm stagnation in the lungs, difficulty lying down due to asthma, etc.

Medicated Diet 4

Medicated Diet 4: Houttuynia Soup

Ingredients: 30 grams of fresh Houttuynia, 5 grams of Houttuynia leaves

Instructions: Boil the above ingredients in water and drink the soup.

Effects: Nourishes Yin, moisturizes dryness, and stops coughing

Medicated Diet 5

Medicated Diet 5: Ginkgo Chicken Cubes

Ingredients: 500 grams of tender chicken meat, 200 grams of ginkgo nuts, 2 egg whites, 3 ml of yellow wine, 10 grams of starch, 3 ml of sesame oil, 50 grams of lard, 50 ml of fresh broth

Instructions: Cut the chicken meat into 1.5 cm cubes. Put them in a bowl and mix with egg whites, salt, and starch. Peel the ginkgo nuts and stir-fry them in hot oil until 60% cooked. Remove the thin skin. Wash and drain. Heat the lard in a pan until 60% hot, then add the chicken cubes and fry until cooked. Add the ginkgo nuts. After the chicken cubes are cooked, remove and drain the oil. Leave 25 grams of lard in the pan, add the green onions, and stir-fry. Add Shaoxing wine, fresh broth, salt, and monosodium glutamate. Pour in the chicken cubes and ginkgo nuts, stir-fry for a few more times, thicken with wet starch, drizzle with sesame oil, and stir-fry a few more times. Serve.

Indications: Suitable for elderly patients with cough, phlegm, and asthma, as well as frequent urination.
