Er Gan Dan: A Traditional Chinese Medicine for Intractable Infantile Diarrhea and Beyond

Er Gan Dan, a traditional Chinese medicine prescription, also known as Er Gan Wan, originated from the book "You You Xin Shu" and was cited from Zhang Huan's prescription. It is mainly used for the treatment of intractable infantile diarrhea.

【Expanded Applications】

 Didancao is the whole herb of the chrysanthemum family plant Didan. It is distributed in southwestern and southern China and is commonly harvested in summer and autumn. It is processed by removing impurities, washing, and drying or using it fresh. It has the effects of clearing heat, cooling blood, detoxifying, and diuresis. However, it should be used with caution during pregnancy.

 1. Various inflammatory diseases (bacterial dysentery, cold, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, acute gastroenteritis, urinary tract infection, conjunctivitis, etc.): 30g of Didancao, 15g each of Yexiaozhu, Dijin, and Tuerfeng, decocted in water and taken orally, 1-2 doses per day. Didancao can also be used alone.

 2. Jaundice hepatitis, whooping cough: 60g of Didancao, decocted in water and taken orally.

 3. Heat in the lungs and cough: 30g each of Didancao and Feixingcao, decocted in water and taken orally.

 4. Breast pain, swelling and toxicity, finger treatment, sores, eczema, snakebite: 60-120g of fresh Didancao, decocted in water and taken orally; also, use a suitable amount of fresh Didancao, a little wine residue, mash it and apply it externally or boil it in water for external washing.

 5. Acute otitis media: fresh Didancao, extract the juice and drop it into the ear, 3-4 times a day.

【Introduction of Prescription Medicinal Materials】

 Didancao: It has the effects of clearing heat, cooling blood, detoxifying, and diuresis. It is commonly used for colds, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, whooping cough, conjunctivitis, jaundice, nephritis edema, irregular menstruation, leukorrhea, eczema, sores, snake bites.

 Jiujie Changpu: It opens the orifices, eliminates phlegm, dispels wind, invigorates the spleen, and detoxifies. It is used to treat fever with delirium, epilepsy with phlegm and convulsions, closed ears with deafness, frequent dreams with forgetfulness, chest stuffiness with nausea, rheumatic pain, sores and itching, swelling and toxicity.

 Loulu: It clears heat, detoxifies, disperses abscesses, promotes lactation, and relaxes tendons and channels. It is used to treat breast abscess pain, suppurative boils on the back, scrofula, breast milk obstruction, and dampness and spasm.

 Di Yu: It cools blood, stops bleeding, detoxifies, and heals wounds. It is used for rectal bleeding, hemorrhoids bleeding, bloody dysentery, excessive menstruation, burns and scalds, abscesses and swelling.

 Pig liver: It nourishes the liver and improves eyesight, replenishes qi and invigorates the spleen. It is commonly used for liver deficiency with blurred vision, night blindness, infantile malnutrition, foot edema, edema, chronic diarrhea and prolapse, and excessive vaginal discharge.
