The Toxicity and Applications of Lead Frost: A Comprehensive Study

February 23, 2024

Lead frost first appeared in "Rihua Zhujia Bencao". It is lead processed into lead acetate.

Lead frost is a white needle-shaped or plate-shaped crystalline. It has a metallic luster. It is easily weathered in the air, soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol, and insoluble in ether. Adding ferric chloride solution will generate white lead chloride precipitate.

The "Bencao Gangmu" describes lead frost as "sweet, sour, cold, and non-toxic." Its aqueous solution does have a slightly sour taste and a slightly sweet smell. However, the statement that it is non-toxic is not appropriate, as when ingested in large amounts, it is absorbed into the internal organs, gradually distributed in the bloodstream, and deposited in the bone marrow, leading to destruction of blood cells, anemia, abdominal pain, muscle and joint pain, and other symptoms. Therefore, it should be considered toxic and requires attention from medical professionals and patients.

Effects and applications of lead frost:

"Rihua Zhujia Bencao": "Clears phlegm, stops palpitations, detoxifies alcohol." "Bencao Tujing": "Treats wind-phlegm and infantile convulsions." "Bencao Gangmu": "Treats vomiting, calms palpitations, and darkens hair." "Bencao Jing Shu": "Lead frost is sweet and cold, it can clear heat and generate body fluids, treat vomiting, calm palpitations, and relieve fear."

In summary, when applied in small amounts topically, it has an astringent effect, but in large amounts, it is corrosive. When ingested in appropriate amounts, it can constrict mucous membranes, control excessive secretion, relieve diarrhea, and have expectorant and sedative effects. It can be used to treat epilepsy, hot phlegm, nosebleeds, laryngeal paralysis, dental caries, oral ulcers, and ulcers.

Harm of lead frost to the human body:

Mild poisoning can cause symptoms of neuroasthenia (such as dizziness, insomnia, fatigue, and vivid dreams) and digestive system symptoms (such as loss of appetite, nausea, and abdominal discomfort). Moderate poisoning can lead to anemia and abdominal colic. Severe poisoning can cause lead paralysis or toxic encephalopathy. If you do not have any protective measures at work, the lead dust on your body will inevitably contaminate the home environment and affect the health of your family. It is recommended to bring your family to the hospital for blood lead testing.
