According to traditional Chinese medicine, Rudi Jin Niu has the effects of dispelling wind and activating collaterals, relieving dampness and pain, and reducing swelling and detoxification. It is used to treat wind-cold-damp arthralgia, muscle and bone pain, fractures, hernia pain, sore throat, stomachache, abdominal pain from intestinal parasites, toothache, boils, carbuncles, and burns.

Liang Mian Zhen is an evergreen woody vine that grows to a height of 1-2m. The young branches, leaf stalks, and veins on both sides of the leaves have hooked prickles. The mature pericarp is 1-4 in number, purple-red in color, and wrinkled when dry.

The fruit of Liang Mian Zhen turns purple-red when ripe and has large glandular spots. The seeds are oval-shaped, with a diameter of 5-6mm, and shiny black. It flowers from March to April and fruits from September to October.
