Blood Filled Grass: A Traditional Chinese Medicine for Various Ailments

Blood Filled Grass, a traditional Chinese medicine, is the whole herb and root of the honeysuckle family plant, Red Mountain Flower. It is harvested in summer and autumn, and can be either cut and dried or used fresh. It grows in open fields and damp forests, and is distributed in Yunnan, Tibet and other places.

Blood Filled Grass is a perennial erect herb, 1-2 meters tall. The roots are slender, cylindrical, and horizontally grown, with many adventitious roots. The stem is round, with longitudinal stripes, obvious nodes, and covered with coarse hairs, with red juice when broken;

The leaves are opposite, pinnately compound, with pairs of raised glands; the leaflets are 3-11, 8-16 cm long and 4-7 cm wide, with one larger apical leaflet, ovate in shape, and the lateral leaflets are lanceolate to ovate in shape;
 


 

The apex is gradually pointed or long acuminate, with fine serrations on the edges, and the base is rounded or broadly wedge-shaped, with both sides of the leaflets covered with coarse hairs, lighter in color on the underside, with pinnate lateral veins;

The base of the apical leaflet is often connected to the lower two pairs of leaflets; the base of the petiole often has small leaf-like stipules.

Conical umbel inflorescence; small, dense flowers, white, with yellow cup-shaped glands among them. Berry-like drupes, black in color.
 


 

  [Medical Efficacy of Blood Filled Grass]

Blood Filled Grass has the functions of dispelling wind, promoting diuresis, dispersing stasis, and promoting blood circulation. It is mainly used to treat acute and chronic nephritis, rheumatic pain, chickenpox itching, sequelae of infantile paralysis, sprains, fractures, and other conditions.

The initial fruit of Blood Filled Grass is green, and the mature drupe is red.

  [Clinical Applications of Blood Filled Grass]

1. Treatment of acute and chronic nephritis: Take 50 grams of Blood Filled Grass, 30 grams of Wine Bottle Flower Roots, and 12 grams each of Mountain Bark and Stone Pepper Grass. Decoct and take orally.

2. Treatment of infantile paralysis and trauma: First, use plum blossom needle to puncture the affected area, then crush a suitable amount of fresh Blood Filled Grass stem and leaves, fry with wine and apply externally.

3. Treatment of fractures: Take a suitable amount of fresh Blood Filled Grass, mash it, and apply with wine or boiled water.
 


 

4. Treatment of edema: Take 15-25 grams of tender leaves and root bark of Blood Filled Grass, cook with tofu and take orally.

5. Treatment of rectal bleeding and prolapse: Take Blood Filled Grass, Black Lock Mei Root, and Mangzhong Flower Root, and cook with pork for consumption.

6. Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, chronic lumbago, acute sprain hematoma, and edema: Take 15-20 grams of Blood Filled Grass. Decoct and take orally or use the decoction to wash the affected area.
