Gan Cao Shi Gao Tang: A Traditional Chinese Medicine Prescription for Post-Illness Symptoms

Gan Cao Shi Gao Tang, the name of a traditional Chinese medicine prescription, is derived from the book "Lan Shi Mi Cang". It is used for patients who have recovered from a long-term illness but still experience symptoms such as a slightly swollen and white-coated tongue, dryness and pain in the throat, frequent throat swelling, a preference for cold drinks, and the presence of white foam in the mouth.


[Composition] 1 part Rehmannia Glutinosa, 1 part Asarum Sieboldii, 3 parts Processed Rehmannia Glutinosa, 3 parts Coptis Chinensis, 5 parts Glycyrrhiza Uralensis, 6 parts Gypsum Fibrosum, 7 parts Bupleurum Chinense, 1 qian Phellodendron Chinense, 1 qian Anemarrhena Asphodeloides, 1 qian Angelica Sinensis, 1 qian Persicae Semen (fried, tip peeled), 1 qian Schizonepeta Tenuifolia, 1 qian Saposhnikovia Divaricata, 1 qian 5 fen Carthamus Tinctorius, a small amount of Prunus Armeniaca, 6 almonds, and 2 small peppers.

[Preparation Method] Grind into small pieces, about the size of a mung bean.

[Functions and Indications] Used for patients who have recovered from a long-term illness but still experience symptoms such as a slightly swollen and white-coated tongue, dryness and pain in the throat, frequent throat swelling, a preference for cold drinks, and the presence of white foam in the mouth.

[Dosage] Take all ingredients and decoct in 2 cups of water until 1 cup remains. Take it warm after meals.

[Introduction to Medicinal Materials]

Rehmannia Glutinosa: Releases the exterior and dispels cold, expels wind and relieves pain, opens the orifices, and warms the lungs and transforms phlegm. It has antipyretic, diuretic, analgesic, and sedative effects. It is used to treat headaches, induce sweating, and relieve phlegm.

Coptis Chinensis: Clears heat, benefits the eyes, and eases pain. It is used for diarrhea, abdominal pain, dysentery, and pain in the female genitalia. It is also used for various conditions such as cold and heat in the five viscera, chronic diarrhea with pus and blood, excessive thirst, restless bones, gastric and colon disorders, gallbladder nourishment, and treatment of mouth ulcers.

Glycyrrhiza Uralensis: Tonifies the spleen and replenishes qi, clears heat and detoxifies, dispels phlegm and stops coughing, alleviates pain, and harmonizes with other herbs. It is used for weakness of the spleen and stomach, fatigue, palpitations, shortness of breath, cough with excessive phlegm, sudden abdominal and limb spasms and pain, abscesses and toxins, and relief of the toxicity and irritancy of other medicines.

Angelica Sinensis: Tonifies blood, activates blood circulation, regulates menstruation and relieves pain, moistens dryness and lubricates the intestines. It is used for blood deficiency, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, accumulation and conglomeration of blood stasis, menorrhagia or metrorrhagia, cold and pain in the abdomen, weakness and numbness of the muscles and skin, dryness and difficulty in defecation, recurrence of bloody dysentery, and treatment of abscesses and ulcers.

Saposhnikovia Divaricata: Used for common cold with wind-cold, fever, aversion to cold, headache, body pain, red eyes, and sore throat. It is also used for common cold with wind-heat, fever, aversion to cold, red eyes, and sore throat. It has similar effects to Schizonepeta Tenuifolia, so the two herbs are often used together.
