February 20, 2024

For people who grow up in rural areas, "Da Wu Pao" is not unfamiliar. We used to pick these wild fruits to eat when we were young, without knowing that they are medicinal herbs. Da Wu Pao has the effects of clearing heat, stopping bleeding, and dispelling wind and dampness. It is commonly used for colds with fever, coughing with blood, nosebleeds, irregular menstruation, external bleeding, dysentery, diarrhea, prolapse of the anus, and rheumatic pain.

Da Wu Pao refers to the roots or the whole plant of the Rosa multiflora, which is mainly distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and other regions in China. The roots and the whole plant are used medicinally. They can be harvested all year round and dried.

It is a shrub that can grow up to 2-3 meters tall. The stems, leaf stalks, and the undersides of the leaves are densely covered with yellow hairs and short curved thorns. The cone-shaped or corymbose inflorescences are borne at the top or in the axils of the leaves, and they are covered with yellow hairs;

The bracts are elliptical with irregularly notched edges; the sepals are ovate, often with multiple splits at the tip, and densely covered with yellow hairs on the outside. The aggregate fruits are spherical, with a diameter of 1-1.5 centimeters, and red in color.

The fruits of Da Wu Pao are green in April, turn red in July, redder in August, then purple, and finally black, indicating full ripeness. The plants of Da Wu Pao are relatively large and bear many fruits. The fully ripe fruits are black.

The lightly red pods are not yet ripe, they are hard and not sweet. The deep red and purplish pods have the best flavor. Pods that are too black, like overly worldly people, are too ripe and their flavor becomes bland.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Da Wu Pao is believed to have the effects of clearing heat, stopping bleeding, and dispelling wind and dampness.
