Cultivation Methods for Gan Sui: Propagation, Transplantation, and Field Management

February 19, 2024

Gan Sui is a unique plant in China, mainly distributed in Gansu, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Henan and other areas. It has been cultivated artificially. Gan Sui has high medicinal value and can be used to treat edema. Let's learn about the cultivation methods of Gan Sui!

I. Propagation

Gan Sui is propagated by seeds. The seeds are oval-shaped, 2.4 millimeters long and 1.5 millimeters in diameter. The weight of one thousand seeds is 3.35 grams. The germination rate of the seeds will significantly decrease when stored at room temperature, so it is recommended to store them in a refrigerator or a dry container. There are two methods for propagation: direct sowing or seedling transplantation.

II. Direct sowing

Dig shallow trenches with a spacing of 20-25 centimeters and a depth of 1 centimeter. Sow the seeds evenly in the trenches, cover with soil, lightly press down, and water. After that, water according to the moisture condition. The seedlings will emerge in about two weeks. Use 15 kilograms of seeds per hectare.

III. Seedling transplantation

The seedlings are grown in the first year and transplanted in the spring of the second year. When transplanting, dig out the root in a string shape, cut it into sections from the thinner parts of the root, without damaging the thicker parts, and plant them in holes. The spacing between rows is 20-25 centimeters and the spacing between plants is 12 centimeters. The soil cover should be about 6 centimeters.

IV. Site selection and land preparation

Select a suitable plot according to the environmental requirements. Apply about 52,500 kilograms of compost or farmyard manure per hectare. Till the soil to a depth of 30 centimeters and level it with a rake.

V. Field management

1. Thinning: When the seedlings reach a height of 5-6 centimeters, maintain a spacing of 12 centimeters between plants.

2. Weeding: Weed during the growth period. Initially, the weeding should be shallow, and gradually deepen it in the later stage of growth.

3. Fertilization: Apply fertilizer 2-3 times a year. In the seedling stage, apply about 15,000 kilograms of manure per hectare, and then apply 1,500 kilograms of calcium superphosphate 20 days later. The third application should be done about a month later, using materials such as ash and cake fertilizer to promote root growth.

4. Flower removal: Remove flower buds during flowering to promote root growth.
