Cultivation Techniques for Red Pothos: A Hardy Climbing Plant with Medicinal Value

February 17, 2024

Red Pothos, as a climbing plant, is widely found in China. Due to its strong vitality, it can grow well in warm and humid areas. In addition, Red Pothos also has high medicinal value, with the effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, cooling blood, and stopping bleeding. Now let's learn about the cultivation techniques of Red Pothos!

  1. Soil

Red Pothos prefers fertile soil, but it can also grow well in general soil with loose texture and good water permeability. It is suitable to use fertile and loose soil rich in humus, and both slightly acidic and neutral soil can be used. For potted plants, it is best to use leaf mold soil or mix 20% sand soil after pond river mud weathering, to facilitate the growth and development of the root system.

  2. Light

Red Pothos prefers moist and semi-shady places, so it is necessary to pull up shade nets during strong sunlight at noon to avoid high temperatures that may affect the growth of Red Pothos.

After 4 pm, when the light is weaker, the shade nets should be closed. However, it is important to note that the shade net is like a shady shed, which can provide a comfortable environment for the plants.

  3. Fertilization

Red Pothos does not require too much fertilizer. Just apply foliar fertilizers appropriately. Water-soluble flower fertilizer can be used at a ratio of 5 grams per 2 kilograms of water.

After preparing the solution, you can start spraying. It is best to choose a time between 4 pm and 6 pm, and the standard is to completely spray the leaves. It can be done every half month.

  4. Pest Prevention

Plants are prone to damage from aphids. For aphids, prevention is important. You can use a 800-fold dilution of oxidized dimethoate for spraying.

The spraying should be done between 8 am and 10 am or after 4 pm, and the standard is to completely spray the leaves. For potted plants, spraying once every 5 days is enough.

  5. Repotting

Repot once a year in spring, replacing the old soil with newly prepared potting soil (containing organic fertilizer and pesticides to eliminate underground pests).

When repotting, use bamboo pieces to rotate along the inner wall of the pot, then invert the pot, hold the plant and soil clump with your hand, and let it tilt under the force of gravity.

Then use a sharp knife to remove the old soil and roots about 3-4 cm thick from the periphery of the soil clump, and then put it into a new pot filled with potting soil, compact the new potting soil around it, and water it thoroughly.

In colder areas during winter, measures such as piling up soil for cold protection should be taken, because Red Pothos does not have high requirements for the growth environment and it grows quite fast with many leaves.

In the summer in the southern region, Red Pothos also has a very good function, which is shading. If you are an art-loving person, you will find that it is highly ornamental. With proper pruning, it can be a standout in potted plants.
