  Morphology of Reed Rhizome

Reed Rhizome is a perennial herbaceous plant of the sedge family. It grows to a height of 60-100cm. The rhizome is thick and short, with fine long fibrous roots.

The stems are clustered, relatively thick and strong, with sharp triangular edges. The base has two leaf sheaths but no leaf blades. There is one bract, which is an extension of the stem, erect and 3-14cm long.

The spikelets are 2-9, clustered into a head-like shape, pseudo-lateral, ovate or elongate-ovate, 8-16mm long and 4-6mm wide, with numerous flowers.

The glume is elongate-ovate, 4-5mm long, pale brown, with a short tip at the apex and a single midrib. There are six lower bristles, similar in length to the nutlet and with reflexed prickles. There are three stamens, with linear anthers, and three styles.

The nutlet is broadly ovate, flattened and three-sided, 2-2.5mm long, glossy and brownish-black when ripe, with indistinct wrinkles. The flowering and fruiting period is from May to September.
