Dietary Therapies for Elderly Frequent Urination: Strengthening Kidney Qi and Nourishing Yin

February 17, 2024

According to traditional Chinese medicine, frequent urination is mainly caused by weak constitution, weak kidney qi, bladder dysfunction, and poor gasification. Therefore, to relieve the symptoms of frequent urination, it is necessary to warm the waist and knees and strengthen the kidney. Below, I will introduce several dietary therapies for the treatment of elderly frequent urination.

Medicated Diet 1: Goji Berry and Sheep Kidney Congee

Ingredients: 250g goji leaves, 1 sheep kidney, 100g sheep meat, about 150g glutinous rice, 2 scallions, a pinch of salt.

Directions: Clean and slice the sheep kidney, remove the membrane, and finely chop the sheep meat. Use the goji leaves to make a decoction, remove the residue, and cook the congee with the goji leaves, sheep kidney, sheep meat, scallions, and glutinous rice. Once the congee is ready, add a pinch of salt and simmer for a while before serving.

Efficacy: Nourishes kidney yin, strengthens kidney qi, and enhances yang energy. Suitable for kidney deficiency, weakened yang qi, lower back pain, weak legs and feet, dizziness, tinnitus, reduced hearing or deafness, frequent urination or urinary incontinence, and other symptoms.

Medicated Diet 2: Fupian Sheep Meat Soup

Ingredients: 15g white fupian, 50g chestnuts (peeled), 50g coix seed, 500g sheep meat, ginger, scallions, pepper, salt (as needed).

Directions: Briefly boil the sheep meat in boiling water, remove and cut into small pieces. Stew the sheep meat with white fupian, chestnuts, coix seed, ginger slices, scallion segments, and pepper until the meat is tender. Season with a little salt. Eat the sheep meat and drink the soup, dividing it into 3 to 4 servings.

Efficacy: Warms the kidneys, assists yang, nourishes blood, invigorates qi, strengthens the spleen, and eliminates dampness. Suitable for menopausal syndrome, with symptoms such as dull complexion, lack of energy, cold limbs, poor appetite, bloating, nocturia, frequent urination, or thin and clear vaginal discharge.

Medicated Diet 3: Lychee and Jujube Paste Soup

Ingredients: 20 lychees, 20 red dates, a little sugar.

Directions: Peel and pit the lychees, remove the pits from the red dates, and mash them into a paste. Add a suitable amount of water and a little sugar to the pot, and cook until done. Eat on an empty stomach.

Efficacy: Tonifies the spleen and nourishes blood, stops nocturnal enuresis. Suitable for patients with poor digestion, poor appetite, anemia, bleeding, nocturnal urination, and other symptoms, to be consumed regularly.

Medicated Diet 4: Garlic Chive Porridge

Ingredients: 60g fresh garlic chives, 100g rice.

Directions: Wash and cut the fresh garlic chives into sections. Cook 100g of rice into porridge with an appropriate amount of water. Then add the cut garlic chives, cooked oil, and salt. Serve warm. Consume 2-3 times a day.

Efficacy: Warms and strengthens the kidneys, strengthens essence. Used to treat kidney yang deficiency, nocturnal enuresis, and frequent urination.

Elderly people with frequent nocturia should avoid using raw, cold, cool, and slippery fruits and vegetables in their diet, especially winter melon, cabbage, amaranth, luffa, sponge gourd, dried cabbage, and their soups. They should also consume less foods that are prone to dampness or reduce digestion and qi movement, such as white radish, and use fewer fruits such as snow pear and banana. It is recommended for elderly people with frequent nocturia to first nourish the spleen and kidney through dietary therapy. The above dishes can be rotated weekly.
