Chinese medicine Gefeiban has the effects of dispersing wind and promoting lung function, regulating qi and relieving pain, strengthening spleen and eliminating dampness, promoting blood circulation and regulating menstruation, and detoxifying. "The Zhejiang Medicinal Plants" states: "Used for treating sore throat, jaundice hepatitis, acute cholecystitis."

Main functions: clearing heat and detoxification; benefiting the lungs and stopping cough; dispelling wind and eliminating dampness; promoting blood circulation and activating collaterals. It is used for residual heat after measles; lung heat cough and asthma; paroxysmal cough; cough caused by labor; ear heat and itching; headache; sores and swelling; rheumatoid arthritis pain; bruises and injuries.

Gefeiban is a perennial herb, reaching up to 2m in height. It usually has a fibrous root, occasionally a conical root. The stem is erect, striped, and covered with soft hairs, with branches in the upper part. The leaves are heteromorphic; the basal leaves have long petioles, including leaf sheaths 2-13cm long.

The leaflets are trifid, with ovate or rounded lobes, the lobes on both sides are inclined at the base, and the lobes at the top have a heart-shaped or wedge-shaped base, measuring 1.5-4cm in length and 1-3cm in width; the leaves in the middle and lower part of the stem are trifid or pinnate, and the leaves in the upper part of the stem are smaller, with short petioles or no petioles, and have leaf sheaths. The leaflets are pinnately divided or 3-lobed, with lanceolate lobes, and all leaf edges have serrations.

There are usually no involucres, occasionally 1-5; umbels have 6-15(-30) rays, measuring 1-4cm in length; bractlets are 1-8, shorter than the pedicel; umbels have 6-20 flowers, with unequal pedicels; petals are inversely ovate, white, with a concave apex and a wedge-shaped base, and the small lingual petals are hairy on the back; the pistil is cylindrical at the base, with a length 2-3 times that of the pistil base, and becomes erect during the young fruit stage and bends to the sides later.

The mature fruit is ovoid, with linear ridges; each ridge groove has 2-3 oil ducts, and there are 4-6 coalescent oil ducts on the combined surface. The flowering and fruiting period is from May to October.
