Bai Du Cao is a relatively rare traditional Chinese medicine that is mainly distributed in the northeast, northwest, and southwest regions of China. Despite its name, which may sound toxic, it is actually a valuable antidote. So how do we cultivate Bai Du Cao?
1. Growing environment
Bai Du Cao prefers warm and well-ventilated environments, and thrives under sunlight. It also prefers moist conditions. Currently, wild Bai Du Cao can be found in various regions of northern China, mostly growing near swamps and damp river ditches. It is also commonly planted on the slopes of river ditches in parks, creating a captivating sight from a distance.
2. Moisture and soil
Bai Du Cao has strong vitality and requires minimal management. It is typically planted in large patches, with parks being the most common location for cultivation. For potted plants, choose a flowerpot with a diameter of around 50 centimeters and fill it with fertile mud, filling it two-thirds full. One pot can accommodate up to 5 plants.
For miniature potted plants, choose a pot with a diameter of around 20 centimeters, and continuously prune the plants during the growing season to promote dwarfing and branching. Keep the pot moist during the growing period.
3. Temperature and pest control
If you choose to cultivate Bai Du Cao in your garden, there is no need to worry about it freezing in winter, as it has strong cold resistance and typically does not require insulation measures.
When grown outdoors, it can naturally survive the winter without protection, but it is recommended to divide the plants every two years. In a well-ventilated and well-lit environment, there are usually no pests or diseases. However, in cases of excessive planting density and poor ventilation, red spider mites may become a problem, which can be controlled using regular insecticides.
