1. Characteristics and Meridians of Gu Jing Cao

【Characteristics】: Spicy and sweet, cool in nature.

① "Ben Cao Shi Yi": "Taste is sweet and neutral."

② "Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao": "Cool."

【Meridians】: Enter the liver and stomach meridians.

"Ben Cao Jing Shu": "Enter the Foot Jue Yin and Yang Ming meridians."

2. Main Functions and Indications

Dispels wind and heat, clears vision and reduces opacity. Treats eye opacity, night blindness, headache, toothache, throat obstruction, and nosebleeds.


Gu Jing Cao

"Kai Bao Ben Cao": "Mainly used to treat throat obstruction, toothache, and various skin diseases."

"Gang Mu": "Treats headache due to wind, eye opacity, post-smallpox opacity, and stops bleeding."

Dispels wind and heat: Used for wind-heat common cold, symptoms include headache, dizziness, aversion to wind, fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, toothache, red eyes, flushed face, thirst with preference for drinking, constipation, and dark urine. Can be combined with Niu Bang Zi, Jing Jie, Long Dan Cao, etc.

Clears vision and reduces opacity: Used for wind-heat eye disorders, symptoms include redness and heat in the white part of the eyes, excessive tearing with sticky discharge, light sensitivity, difficulty opening the eyes, or black spots in the visual field, accompanied by chills and fever, headache, nasal congestion. This can be conjunctivitis or dot-like corneal opacity. Can be combined with Ju Hua, Jue Ming Zi, Mu Zei, Xia Ku Cao.

【Applications of Gu Jing Cao in Combination】

1. Post-smallpox opacity: Use equal parts of Shi Jue Ming (fried, ground) and Gu Jing Cao to make a fine powder. Dip it in pig liver for consumption. ("Hong Fei Ji")

2. Nosebleeds: Pound Gu Jing Cao into a fine powder and mix with hot noodle soup for consumption (2 qian). ("Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang")

【Contraindications of Gu Jing Cao】

Gu Jing Cao should not be used for eye disorders caused by yin deficiency and blood deficiency.
