The Medicinal Properties and Clinical Applications of Musk: A Traditional Chinese Medicine

The traditional Chinese medicine musk is mentioned in the "Shennong Bencao Jing". It is also known as cunxiang, yuancun, dangmenzi, chouzi, xiangqizi. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Tibet, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Inner Mongolia and other regions. It has a pungent and warm nature and enters the heart, spleen, and liver meridians. It opens the orifices, promotes blood circulation, disperses nodules, and relieves pain.

  [Clinical Applications]

  Treatment of angina pectoris

  Using artificial musk pressed into tablets with lactose (each tablet contains 30mg of artificial musk), when angina pectoris occurs or when chest tightness and shortness of breath caused by coronary heart disease, take 1 tablet under the tongue. For severe pain, take 1.5-2 tablets. Observing 160 cases, they took at least 2 tablets, most of them took 10-20 tablets, and some took 70-80 tablets. The results are as follows: 1) It is equally effective as nitroglycerin, with a response time of 2-5 minutes after taking (including cases where it works faster and lasts longer than nitroglycerin), 119 cases (74.37%). 2) It is equally effective as nitroglycerin, but works slower, with a response time of 7-10 minutes after taking, 27 cases (16.88%). 3) Its analgesic effect is not as good as nitroglycerin, and some cases require 2 tablets to achieve pain relief, 6 cases (3.75%). 4) Ineffective in 8 cases (5%). Side effects: 3 cases experienced nausea due to the smell of musk, but they gradually adapted to it and did not need to stop using the medication. No headaches, facial swelling, or dizziness were observed. There was no increase in blood pressure in patients with hypertension, and no increase in heart rate was observed. Considering that there were 30 cases where the effect was slower and worse than nitroglycerin, and some cases required 2 tablets to achieve pain relief (but no toxic reactions were observed), it may be considered to increase the dosage to 50mg per tablet to improve efficacy.
