Gangban Gui is used to treat chronic eczema: take four liang of fresh Gangban Gui. Boil it with water and use the liquid to wash externally once a day. (Selected Investigation Data on Single Formula)

Gangban Gui is the dried above-ground part of the Polygonum capitatum, a plant of the Polygonaceae family. It is harvested and dried during the flowering period in summer. Remove impurities, lightly wash, cut into sections, and dry. It has the effects of clearing heat and detoxification, diuresis and reducing swelling, and relieving cough. It is used for sore throat, lung heat cough, children's sudden cough, edema with decreased urine output, damp-heat diarrhea, eczema, boils and swelling, snake bites, and insect bites.

The original form of Gangban Gui

Gangban Gui is a perennial herb of the Polygonaceae family. The stem is angled, reddish-brown, and has backward-hooked thorns.

The leaves are opposite, shield-shaped; leaf blades are nearly triangular, 4-6cm long, 5-8cm wide, with a pointed apex, a near cordate or truncate base, and sparse hooked thorns along the veins on the lower surface; the leaf sheaths are nearly circular, clasping the stem; leaf stalks are long, sparsely covered with backward-hooked thorns.

The inflorescence is short and spike-like; bracts are round; corolla is 5-lobed, pale red or white, and enlarges and becomes fleshy and deep blue when fruiting; stamens are 8; pistil is 3-lobed.

The fruit is spherical, enclosed in a blue, juicy corolla. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from September to October.
