【Recordings in Ancient Texts about Nv Wan】

According to Tao Yin Ju, recently, medical prescriptions no longer use Nv Wan, and it is also rarely seen among the people, almost disappearing. There is also another herb called Bai Wan that is similar to Zi Wan, but it is not another name for Nv Wan.

Tang Ben Zhu explains that Bai Wan is the same as Nv Wan, and there is no other name for it. It was once mentioned but not used in a famous medical book. There is no Bai Wan now because it was deleted when the Tang Dynasty revised the Materia Medica.

The extended meaning is that Nv Wan, also known as Bai Wan, is not two different things. It is appropriate to delete Bai Wan when revising the Materia Medica in the Tang Dynasty. Tao Yin Ju can speak, but cannot specify the characteristics. I will directly refer to the description in the classic texts, which is very clear. Therefore, I will directly take from the classics.

Nv Wan, also known as Bai Wan, belongs to the same category as Zi Wan. Although Zi Wan and Bai Wan are different in color, they have the same origin. They are afraid of salty and brackish substances.

The functions of Bai Wan and Zi Wan are similar but different. Zi Wan mainly deals with the accumulation of cold and heat in the middle, causing diseases in the upper, middle, and lower parts of the body. Bai Wan mainly deals with wind, cold, and heat, with the accumulation of qi in the vital organs. It can cause diseases in the upper, middle, and lower parts of the body, and can also manifest as internal and external symptoms. When Nv Wan resolves the accumulation, it disperses and opens up, thus relieving nausea, closing diarrhea, calming epilepsy, and eliminating cold and heat. It is biased towards resolving the external symptoms and promoting urination. Although it is not Jin Yu, even if it is not appropriate to abandon the method of using Jin Yu, it is difficult to resolve the accumulation from the vital organs.
