【Botanical Morphology of Zi Zhu Ye】

Zi Zhu Ye is a shrub or small tree. The young branches are covered with gray-white long hairs. The leaves are opposite, elongated oval to lanceolate in shape. The upper surface has short soft hairs, which become slightly rough when old. The lower surface is densely covered with gray-white hairs and has indistinct golden yellow glandular dots. The umbel inflorescence branches 5-7 times, with a total peduncle length of 2-4 cm. The calyx is 4-toothed and covered with star-shaped soft hairs. The corolla is purple, tubular, with a 4-lobed apex and slightly covered with fine hairs. There are 4 stamens and the ovary is superior with 4 chambers. The fruit of Zi Zhu Ye is berry-like, small and spherical, with glandular dots and turns purplish-red when ripe. It blooms in the summer.
