Exploring the Uses and Storage of Di Yu in Traditional Chinese Medicine

February 9, 2024

Di Yu is the root of the Rosaceae plant Di Yu. It is a perennial herb with a slightly cold nature and a bitter, sour, and astringent taste. How is Di Yu stored in traditional Chinese medicine? Let's find out together!

Uses of Di Yu

1. Treats burns:

Grind Di Yu into oil, mix it with sesame oil, and apply it topically to relieve pain. If blisters have already formed, pierce them to release the pus, then apply the Di Yu powder and cover the affected area. (From "Complete Book of Surgical Syndromes and Treatments")

2. Treats gastric ulcers with bleeding: Take 9 grams of raw Di Yu, 15 grams of cuttlefish bone, and 6 grams of agarwood. Decoct them in water and drink the decoction. (From "Ningxia Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine")

3. Treats primary thrombocytopenic purpura: Take 30 grams each of raw Di Yu and Prince Ginseng, or add 30 grams of Achyranthes bidentata. Decoct them in water and drink the decoction for 2 months. (From "Exhibition of New Treatment Methods for Traditional Chinese Medicine")

4. Treats external bleeding: Grind Di Yu into fine powder and apply it to the affected area. It can also be combined with Rubia cordifolia, White Mustard Seed, and Scutellaria baicalensis, ground into powder, and applied externally. (From "Selection of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine from Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, and Qinghai")

5. Treats abnormal vaginal discharge: Take 60 grams of Di Yu, one liter of rice vinegar, boil it for several boils to remove impurities, and drink one liang before meals.

Harvesting and Processing Di Yu

In spring when it starts to sprout or in autumn after the plant withers, dig up the roots, remove the fibrous roots, wash them, and dry them or cut them into slices and dry them.

Storage of Di Yu

Store it in a well-ventilated and dry place to prevent moth infestation.
