Distinguishing Mutong and Guanmutong: Taste, Medicinal Properties, Appearance, and Toxicity

February 9, 2024

Guanmutong used to be used in the treatment of many diseases, but after it was verified as a nephrotoxic Chinese medicine, it is rarely used in the medical field. Instead, Mutong is used. So how do we correctly distinguish between Mutong and Guanmutong?

1. Different Taste

Mutong has a light taste, and the taste becomes weaker if chewed for a long time. However, Guanmutong is different. It starts with a mild taste, but as you chew it longer, it will have a bitter sensation. Many experts in traditional Chinese medicine describe the taste of Guanmutong as "camphor-like and pungent."

2. Different Medicinal Properties

Mutong mainly has the property of "dampness-eliminating," while Guanmutong mainly has the property of "heat-clearing." For example, if a patient's body belongs to the non-febrile type and has a weak constitution, long-term use of medicines containing Guanmutong, such as Longdan Xiegan Wan, can easily damage the body.

3. Different Appearance

Guanmutong is thicker and not easily broken, with a yellow color in the wood section. The surface of Mutong is usually grayish-brown, with many irregular cracks and thick skin.

4. Difference in Toxicity

The toxicity of Guanmutong has been highly debated in the field of traditional Chinese medicine in China, and it has been ultimately confirmed.
