The stem is usually clustered, with a knee-shaped upright growth, 10-30 cm tall. In shady and moist habitats, the lower part of the stem often grows creeping, with roots growing on the nodes. The upper part is twisted and rises, reaching up to 60 cm in length, single or branched, densely covered with 1-1.5 mm long multicellular hairs.

The leaves are opposite, with the two pairs at the top of the stem closely arranged in a whorl shape, often 1-2 times larger than the lower leaves. The leaf blades are ovate to ovate-elliptic, occasionally lanceolate, 1.5-8 cm long, 8-40 mm wide;

The midrib is slightly wide and prominent on the lower side, and the lateral veins are thin and inconspicuous;

The leaf stalk of Da Guolu Huang is 2-12 times shorter than the leaf blade and densely covered with soft hairs. The inflorescence is terminal, nearly head-like, and multi-flowered; the flower stalk is 1-7 mm long and covered with soft hairs; the calyx is 6-9 mm long, split almost to the base, with lanceolate lobes and a gradually pointed tip on the dorsal side, covered with soft hairs;

The pollen grains have 3-pore furrows and are nearly spherical (28.5-36 × 28-33 μm) with a reticulate surface pattern; the style is up to 8 mm long, and the lower part and the top of the ovary are hairy.
