The Uses and Precautions of Suigu: A Traditional Chinese Medicine

  The Chinese medicine "Suigu" is the rhizome and tuber of the Gramineae plant Duzhuye. It is generally harvested in the summer and autumn seasons and dried. How to consume Suigu?


  Appearance of Suigu

  1. Dried rhizome and tuber. The rhizome is cylindrical, connected in segments, with a part of stems and leaves remaining at the top, rough surface, brownish-gray or brownish-black color, and numerous tubers clustered around.

  2. Intact tubers are spindle-shaped, 1-3cm long, 2-5mm in diameter, with a yellowish-white to pale yellow surface, fleshy, irregular wrinkles on the surface, and a light yellowish-white color on the broken surface.

  Consumption of Suigu

  Suigu can be used in two ways, externally and internally.

  Externally, it is usually crushed and applied to wounds, which can stop bleeding, reduce swelling, and promote blood circulation. Internally, it is used for diuresis and relieving internal heat.

  ① For treating nephritis: Take 50 grams of Duzhuye rhizome and Dishi. Decoct and take orally, once a day. (From "Jiangxi Herbal Medicine")

  ② For treating fever, restlessness, and thirst: Take 30-50 grams of Duzhuye rhizome or leaves. Decoct and take orally. (From "Jiangxi Herbal Medicine")

  Reminder: Suigu has the effect of inducing abortion, so women, especially pregnant women, should avoid consuming Suigu.
