The root or root bark of narrow-leafed fennel is called red fennel root, mainly distributed in the regions south of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It promotes blood circulation and relieves pain; it dispels wind and eliminates dampness.

Red fennel root grows in the moist valleys on both sides of streams, in mixed forests. It is distributed in various provinces and regions south of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

【Characteristics of Red Fennel Root】

The root is cylindrical, often irregularly curved, with a diameter of usually 2-3 cm. The surface is rough and brown, with obvious transverse cracks and longitudinal wrinkles caused by shrinkage. A small amount of cork is easily peeled off to reveal the brown cortex.

The texture is hard and not easily broken. The cross-section is light brown, with reddish-brown outer periphery. The wood occupies a large part of the root, and concentric rings (annual rings) can be seen. It has a fragrant aroma and a pungent and astringent taste.

The bark is irregularly shaped, with varying sizes, slightly curled, and 1-2 mm thick. The outer appearance is brown, with longitudinal wrinkles and a few transverse cracks.

The inner surface is reddish-brown and smooth, with longitudinal textures. The texture is hard and brittle, and the cross-section is slightly neat. The aroma and taste are the same as the root. It is best to use dried and mud-free ones for both the root and the bark.

Wash and soak slightly, then take them out and wait until they are moist. Cut the root diagonally into slices, and cut the root bark into shreds. Then sun-dry them.

It dispels wind, promotes blood circulation, disperses stasis, and relieves pain. It is used to treat injuries from falls, rheumatic pain, abscesses, and swelling and toxicity.
