Xianghua Leaves: A Traditional Chinese Medicine for Menstruation and Injury

Leaves of Xianghua, a Chinese medicine, are the whole grass of the Euphorbiaceae plant Xianghua grass. It has the effects of cooling blood, regulating menstruation, dispersing blood stasis, and reducing swelling. It is mainly used to treat excessive menstruation, contusions and injuries, and fractures.


【Nature and Meridian】

It has a cold nature, with a bitter and astringent taste. It belongs to the Liver meridian.

【Functions and Indications】

It cools the blood, regulates menstruation, disperses blood stasis, and reduces swelling. It is classified as a warm meridian hemostatic medicine.

【Usage and Dosage】

Orally: decoct 3-9 grams. Externally: apply an appropriate amount of fresh leaves.

【Pharmacological Actions】

The hot water extract of flowers and leaves has inhibitory effects on Mycobacterium tuberculosis (H37) in vitro, while stems and roots have no effect. The juice of the leaves or plant is toxic, and ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and delirium. The toxic component may be in the resin part.
