Wuxiangteng: A Traditional Chinese Medicine for Heat Clearance and Pain Relief

Wuxiangteng, a traditional Chinese medicine, is the whole plant of Schisandra propinqua var. sinensis, a member of the Magnoliaceae family. It has the effects of clearing heat and detoxification, promoting blood circulation and relieving pain, and reducing swelling. It is commonly used to treat influenza, snake and rabies bites, rheumatism and numbness, bruises and injuries, irregular menstruation, and boils and sores.

  Properties: 1. "Yunnan Chinese Medicinal Herbs": slightly astringent and bitter, cold.

  2. "Selected Yunnan Chinese Medicinal Herbs": root and vine: sweet and spicy, neutral; leaves: light, neutral.

  Channels: It enters the lung and liver channels.

  Wuxiangteng has the functions of clearing heat and detoxification, promoting blood circulation and relieving pain, and reducing swelling. It is commonly used to treat influenza, snake and rabies bites, rheumatism and numbness, bruises and injuries, irregular menstruation, and boils and sores.

  1. "Yunnan Chinese Medicinal Herbs": The root can clear heat and detoxify, reduce swelling and relieve pain. It can prevent meningitis, influenza, treat snake bites, unknown swelling and toxins, external bleeding, and fractures.

  2. "Selected Yunnan Chinese Medicinal Herbs": The root and vine can promote blood circulation, reduce swelling, and relieve pain; the leaves can stop bleeding and disperse stasis.

  [Prescriptions and Applications]

  1. For treating snake bites, rabies bites, and sores: Take an appropriate amount of Wuxiangteng leaves, mash them and apply externally.

  2. For treating rheumatism and numbness, bruises and injuries, stomach pain, irregular menstruation, and vasculitis: Take 4 to 6 qian (Chinese unit of weight) of Wuxiangteng root and stem. Decoct and take orally, or soak in alcohol and take orally.

  3. For treating external bleeding: Grind the Wuxiangteng root bark or leaves into powder and apply it to the wound. (Prescriptions from "Selected Yunnan Chinese Medicinal Herbs")

 [Dosage and Administration]

  Orally: Decoct 4 to 6 qian; or soak in alcohol. Externally: Mash and apply, or grind into powder and sprinkle.
