  [Natural form of Gangban Gui]

  Gangban Gui is a perennial herb. The stem is angular and reddish-brown with downward-hooked thorns.

  The leaves are opposite, shield-shaped; leaf blade is nearly triangular, 4-6cm long, 5-8cm wide, pointed at the apex, nearly cordate or truncate at the base, sparsely hooked thorns on the lower surface along the veins; stipular sheath is nearly circular, clasping the stem; petiole is long, sparsely with hooked thorns.

  The inflorescence is short spike-like; bracts are round; corolla is deeply 5-lobed, pale red or white, enlarging and becoming fleshy and deep blue when fruiting; stamens are 8; pistil is 3-lobed.

  The fruit is spherical and enclosed in the juicy blue corolla. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from September to October.
