Gangban Gui is a perennial herbaceous plant. The stem is angular and reddish-brown, with downward hooked thorns.
Leaves are opposite, shield-shaped; leaf blades are nearly triangular, 4 to 6 cm long, 5 to 8 cm wide, pointed at the tip, nearly heart-shaped or truncate at the base, and sparsely hooked thorns are present on the lower surface along the veins; stipules are nearly circular and sheathing the stem; leaf stalks are long, sparsely with hooked thorns.
Inflorescence is short and spike-like; bracts are round; corollas are 5 deeply divided, pale red or white, enlarging and becoming fleshy and deep blue when fruiting; stamens are 8; pistil is 3-lobed.
The achene is spherical and enclosed within the juicy blue corolla. Flowering period is from June to August, and fruiting period is from September to October.
