【Understanding and Managing Knee Pain: Causes and Dietary Remedies】

February 4, 2024

Walking can cause knee pain for many people, especially obese middle-aged women. What is the reason for this? In addition to timely treatment and keeping warm, there are some dietary methods that can have a nourishing effect. Let's take a look together!

【What causes knee pain when walking?】

There are many reasons for joint pain, which can be categorized as soft tissue, cartilage, bone, and inflammation based on age, gender, affected area, and symptoms.

Knee pain is not caused by a problem in the knee joint itself, but rather by diseases in the lumbar spine and hip joints. Diseases such as hip osteoarthritis, hip inflammation, tuberculosis, effusion, femoral head necrosis, and femoral neck fracture can affect the closed nerve and cause knee pain.

Having arthritis and coexisting lumbar spine or hip diseases can worsen knee pain. The knee joint symptoms in the latter case are influenced by lumbar spine and hip factors. Prolonged exposure to cold and large temperature differences are the main causes of arthritis. Especially in autumn, when the temperature fluctuates between cold and warm, low temperature or large temperature differences can cause muscle and blood vessel contraction, leading to joint pain.

【Simple self-assessment of knee joint pain】

Firstly, let's consider two scenarios:

1. Feeling knee joint swelling when squatting down.

Assessment: There is excess fluid (synovial fluid, pus, or blood) in the knee joint.

Explanation: For example, if we want to fold a plastic bag, it is not easy to fold if there is water or air inside. When squatting down, the knee joint needs to be folded, and the joint will feel swollen and difficult to squat down. This type of fatigue injury is more common in middle-aged people. It is most likely to occur after running, climbing, or walking for a long time. Pus or blood can be seen in cases of infection or traumatic injury.

2. Difficulty standing up or feeling pain after squatting down, walking or climbing stairs, or bending the knee after sitting for a long time.

Assessment: There is damage to the joint surface of the patella and femoral condyle.

Explanation: When standing up or climbing stairs, the knee joint needs to be extended, and the patella and femoral condyle fit tightly. When the knee is flexed, they fit even tighter. If there is damage to the joint surface, it will be painful when squeezed. Many young people may experience this after exercising, and older people may experience it after walking for a long time or sitting with the knee bent for a long time.

【Dietary remedies for knee pain】

1. Papaya stewed with wine

Cut open the top of the papaya, remove the seeds, and fill it with rice wine. Cover it with the top and secure it with a bamboo skewer. Put the papaya filled with rice wine into a container, steam it over water for 2 hours, then take out the papaya, open the top, and pour out the rice wine. Cut the papaya into pieces and consume it several times within a day. Drink 22 spoonfuls of wine the next day, twice a day.

2. Pangolin

Take 5 grams of pangolin, 10 grams of white vitex, and 15 grams of ze lan. Boil with one catty of yellow rice wine over low heat. Add a little brown sugar, remove the dregs and drink the wine. Take it at least twice a day and be consistent. In hot weather, it can be stored in the refrigerator and heated before consumption. Its effects include promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, and resolving hardness.

3. Stewed tendon

Soak the tendon in water and wash it after it becomes fat. Stew it with red dates, ginger, salt, and chicken vine. Add wine until the tendon is tender. Add spring onion and monosodium glutamate to finish. Drink the soup and eat the dates and tendon once a day for 7 consecutive days.

4. White mustard

For external application, use 10 grams of white mustard, 10 grams of asarum, 10 grams of Sichuan lovage, 10 grams of zao ci, 10 grams of tu yuan, 5 grams of xue jie, 10 grams of camphor, and 3 grams of borneol. Crush the ingredients into powder, mix with white wine to make a paste, and apply it to the painful points of the knee joint. If there are no painful points, apply it to the inner and outer knee points, Xuehai point, and Liangqiu point. Apply the ointment externally for 8 hours once a day, and repeat this for 10 times as one course of treatment.
