February 4, 2024

Chinese herbal formula Qian Zheng San is a wind-dispersing formula that has the effects of dispelling wind, transforming phlegm, and opening the meridians to stop spasms. It is mainly used for wind affecting the head and face meridians, with symptoms such as deviation of the mouth and eyes, facial muscle twitching, pale red tongue, and white coating.

Introduction of Qian Zheng San:

The formula consists of Bai Fu Zi (Typhonium Rhizome), Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), and Quan Xie (Scorpio).

Effects: dispels wind, transforms phlegm, and stops spasms.

Indications: stroke, deviation of the mouth and eyes caused by wind and phlegm blocking the head and face meridians. It is used to treat facial paralysis, hemiplegia, facial nerve paralysis, and migraine caused by stroke.

Dosage: powder: 2-3g per dose, taken orally 2-3 times a day. Decoction: boil in water and take, the dosage should generally be less than 10g.

Modern research on Qian Zheng San:

Experiments using the constant-speed perfusion pump method on rabbit hind limb blood vessels showed that after local application of this formula, the resistance of the perfused blood vessels decreased after 20 minutes, and the effect peaked after 30 minutes.

In the same experiment, after administration to rats, the resistance of hind limb blood vessels decreased after 10 minutes, and the effect peaked after 30 minutes. The resistance started to recover after 60 minutes.

Precautions for Qian Zheng San:

Bai Fu Zi in Qian Zheng San has a warm and dry nature, and it is suitable for those with wind and phlegm blocking the meridians and leaning towards cold nature. The key points for treatment are sudden deviation of the mouth and eyes, pale tongue, and white coating.

If the condition is caused by qi deficiency, blood stasis, or internal movement of liver wind resulting in deviation of the mouth and eyes or hemiplegia, this formula should not be used. Both Bai Fu Zi and Quan Xie in the formula are toxic substances, so the dosage should be used with caution.

Qian Zheng San is a commonly used formula for wind affecting the meridians, deviation of the mouth and eyes. If adding Wugong, Tian Ma, Di Long, and other herbs that dispel wind, stop spasms, and open the meridians, the therapeutic effect can be enhanced.
