  【Morphological Characteristics】

  Annual climbing herb. The whole plant is fleshy, smooth and hairless. The stem can reach 3-4m in length, with obvious branches, green or pale purple. Leaves are alternate; leaf stalks are 1-3cm long;

  Leaf blades are broadly ovate, heart-shaped to elongated elliptic, 2-19cm long, 2-16cm wide, with an acute apex and a heart-shaped or rounded base, occasionally extending downwards, with entire margins. Veins are slightly concave on the lower surface and slightly convex on the upper surface.

  Spike-like inflorescences are axillary or terminal, 2-23cm long, single or branched; bracts are 2, resembling sepals, lanceolate, about 5mm long, persistent; flowers are sessile, with 5 sepals, pale purple or light red, white at the lower part, fused into a tube;

  No petals; stamens are 5, located at the mouth of the calyx tube, opposite to the sepals, filaments erect in the bud; pistils are 3, fused at the base, with numerous small granular protrusions on the stigma.

  Fruit is ovoid or spherical, 5-6mm long, dark purple, juicy, wrapped by persistent fleshy bracts and sepals. Seeds are nearly spherical. Flowering period is from June to September, and fruiting period is from July to October.
