The Medicinal Applications of Liu Jenu: Promoting Healing, Stopping Bleeding, and Aiding Digestion

Liu Jenu is the whole plant of the Asteraceae plant, Qihao, which is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and other places. It is used in medicine for its effects of promoting healing, stopping bleeding, and aiding digestion. Below, I will introduce the medicinal applications of Liu Jenu.


 

1. Liu Jenu Powder

Prescription: Liu Jenu.

Preparation: Grind Liu Jenu into powder and apply it to the wound.

Functions and Indications: It is used to treat gold ulcers and burns.

2. Liu Jenu Wine

Prescription: Liu Jenu 10g, Licorice 10g, White wine 100ml.

Preparation: Crush Liu Jenu and Licorice, put them into a pot, add 200ml of water and simmer until it reduces to 100ml. Then add 100ml of white wine and simmer until it reduces to 100ml. Strain and set aside.

Functions and Indications: It promotes blood circulation, regulates menstruation, disperses blood stasis, and relieves pain. It is used for the treatment of blood stasis and amenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain due to blood stasis, fractures, sprains, and bleeding from wounds.

Dosage and Administration: Take it warm once.

Note: Pregnant women should not drink this wine.
 


 

3. Liu Jenu Decoction

Prescription: Liu Jenu 2 liang (remove stems and leaves), Dong Quai 1 liang (remove the head and cut into pieces, bake), Licorice 2 qian (roast and file).

Preparation: Grind the ingredients into coarse powder.

Functions and Indications: It is used for postpartum lochia retention, septicemia, restlessness, extreme thirst, blurred vision, hallucinations, abdominal pain, nausea, and loss of appetite.

Dosage and Administration: Take 2 qian (about 6 grams) with 1.5 cups of water and add 7 slices of fresh ginger. Simmer until it reduces to 7 minutes. Remove the residue and take it while hot. For the treatment of syncope, the medicine should be decocted in advance for emergencies.

4. Liu Jenu Decoction

Prescription: Liu Jenu 75g, Red Paeonia (filed, fried) 60g, White Poria (remove black skin) 30g, Chuanxiong, Dong Quai (cut into pieces, bake) 45g each, Artemisia leaf (fried) 120g.

Preparation: Grind the above six ingredients into coarse powder and sift.

Functions and Indications: It is used to treat excessive menstrual bleeding in women.

Dosage and Administration: Take 6g with 150ml of water, simmer until it reduces to 100ml, remove the residue, and take it on an empty stomach twice a day.
